Fellow Inmates, for a variety of reasons, I'm looking at combining home theater and music listening into one system. Towards that end, I plan to get a respectable universal player in the near future. SACD playback is a must. After a bit of research, I've narrowed my choices to the Marantz UD7007 and the Oppo 105 Darbee edition. I think either of these units would be more than acceptable performers. Which one would you vote for? Thanks!

I don't know anything about the Marantz, but it appears to have similar functions to the Oppo BDP-105D. I own the Oppo BDP-105D and I like it very much. It is the heart of my audio/video system.

The Oppo has two additional USB ports on the back if you are into storing music on USB flash drives. I especially like this feature on my Oppo and I bought two 256-GB flash drives for the rear ports. I use the front port for switching between different flash drives.

The Marantz costs less and there seems to be some excellent discounts on the Marantz to boot.

Perhaps you should listen to both and determine whether or not one of them sounds better to you.

Good luck,
John Elison

I suspect, but have no evidence, that Marantz technical support does not equal the excellent Oppo support, so I'd vote for the Oppo. Caveat: I use an Oppo 95 and 105 daily, whereas my Marantz is a Model 18 receiver I bought in 1968 and keep in my audio collection along with AR3a speakers and an AR turntable.

If you need a Swiss Army knife player, the Oppo 105 family is tough to beat. Likely will better the Marantz. I haven't listened to the Marantz universal players much, but they didn't seem to keep up with their SACD stand alone units.

However, I prefer the Marantz SACD players over the Oppo for two channel SACD and CD playback and DAC. Oppo just isn't my cup of tea unless drastically modded (Modwright sound was fantastic but a completely different price class)

YMMV. Demo if you can.

But others might prefer OPPO.

I find the OPPO to be more 'up-front' and the Marantz a bit laid back. That said, OPPO is likely building about the best multi-disk player on the planet right now, for the price, and it's hard to ignore that just for a bit of preference in sound.

I'm sticking with last decade's technology, the Marantz DV-9600, because I don't watch blu-ray movies much or at all.

The DV-9600 is a killer player.

Great Advice Listen to both before final purchase. Oppo players also suck with BD sound, if compared to Sony BD HDMI connected ,I find Oppo unlistenable, not keen on overbright Oppo BD video either.

Maybe you should try listening through the Oppo's balanced outputs. My Oppo sounds just fine, but I've never listened to audio through its unbalanced outputs or its HDMI connection. In fact, I turned off its HDMI audio output in the settings menu.

Picture quality on my Oppo BDP-105D is also very nice on my 55" Samsung HDTV.

I guess I'm wondering why anyone would buy an Oppo BDP-105D if they didn't intend to use its balanced audio outputs. That would be pretty stupid in my opinion.

To each his own! Such is life!

John, stick to the technical/engineering stuff and leave the 'audiophile' stuff to the rest of us. ;-)

The D's ability to DSD would not make the buyer's choice stupid. Would it?
The D can DSD, the non-D cannot DSD - at least that is what I could find when I compared them online. Not sure if a new firmware enabled that on the non-D.

It is a shame that the Marantz SA-11S3 does not do DSD. Else it would be a "go to" player for my needs.

They both play DSD, and can Play DSD from a Memory Stick, AFAIK.

I also have the Samsung 55" HDTV and I can tell that via HDMI the Oppo 1O3
is very inferior to a cheaper Sony 1000ES, for mch SACD I use the excellent Sony 5400ES player, I have no interest in analogue balanced outs.

Well, if you don't need balanced outputs and you can do without a headphone output, you can save $700 by buying the BDP-103D instead. The BDP-103D will do DSD and it costs only $599.

I don't think there is a plain BDP-105 anymore; it has been replace by the BDP-105D. However, the plain BDP-103 is still listed for $499.

Well, if you have no interest in balanced outputs, that pretty much invalidates any comparison you make.

Please check the link below for the 105's spec. I have read it on the net that it can play DSD only if you burn the DSD files to DVDs and then spin the disc. But not from USB.

This is on the page describing firmware history at oppodigital.com:

Release Date: May 3, 2013

Loader Version:
6U0900 or 7B1000 (BDP-103)
7B1000 (BDP-105)

Sub Version:
MCU103-05-0916 (BDP-103)
MCU105-04-01113 (BDP-105)

1. Added support for Direct Stream Digital (DSD) file playback from local storage. The DSD files can be either stereo or multi-channel. Both the DFF and the DSF formats are supported.

I'm guessing local storage is a USB stick or drive connected to one of the USB ports.

My BDP-105 without a D plays DSD files from the hard drive.

Cannot comment on the comparison with the Marantz. I play SACD on a Esoteric DV-60 and CD on a Pioneer CLD-HF9G/Esoteric DD-10/Esoteric D-30 combination. But it does sound fine on its own.

But you can, also, pull them from a network source via Ethernet.

Is Oppo's legendary after sale support. My experiences with their support have always been very satisfactory and I've experienced, and read about, them going well out of their way to satisfy a customer.

I lost my BDP-93's remote control during a move. I contacted Oppo's Customer Support in an attempt to purchase another remote. They would NOT let me buy one, imagine that!! Instead, 3 days later, a brand new remote was delivered to my doorstep for absolutely no charge. That, my friends, is GREAT Customer Support! Oppo will have my business as long as they remain solvent...

I hope they're not having problems because I like them, too.

I first bought an Oppo BDP-105D for myself and then I bought BDP-103D's for my two grown children for Christmas. I think Oppo makes excellent universal digital players.

Best regards,
John Elison

I think it was just a poor choice of words. Oppo is going gangbusters thanks to excellent products for the money and superb tech and post-sales support which puts many expensive, ultra high end products to shame. Solvency is not at all an issue. That, in spite of even disbeliever's haughty disapproval.

Thank You for the update. Was not aware of this. Saves some bucks. How is the sound of CD/SACDs on D vs non-D? Anyone did any comparison?
