Grover Washington "Winelight" 5.1 remix by Elliot Scheiner has been reissued on SACD by Audio Fidelity. I have the original DVD-A on Elektra, and it's a stunner. Crystal clear, and the soundstage makes you feel as though you are floating on air.

Sorry to embrace my inner jazz snob but I will pass on this one. I did, however, just buy a few jazz JSACDs.

Archie Shepp: Blue Ballads
Steve Kuhn: Pavane pour une infante defunte
Joao Gilberto: Self titled
Bill Evans: How My Heart Sings
Milt Jackson: Opus de Jazz
Curtis Fuller: Blues-ette

well, yes. this is 'jazz that is smooth', just before "smooth jazz" made its regretful debut. there are still artists that put out 'jazz that is smooth' and it shouldn't be mixed into the same bag.

sure, some of the same excellent musicians that first made 'jazz that is smooth' went on to make 'smooth jazz" and they won't die poor. too bad that some of them like bob james, and david sanborn don't still make real jazz.

beyond this, its all taste. we know chris botti has jazz in him but he makes too much dough for the sweet, juicy stuff.

kkurt elling does a take on winelight that is delightful, and that isn'y smoov jazz. it's the real thing.

I'm a long-time jazz DJ with tastes - and a massive collection - that span the entire history of the music.

Good music, well-played, speaks for itself. Washington was a fine player capable of a range of styles and choices. Jazz is a continuum that embraces multitudes, from Bunny Berigan to Albert Ayler to Joe Zawinul to Johnny Hodges. I won't limit my experience of it based upon arbitrary biases or snobbery.

I concur- it is all Jazz!

I certainly don't disagree with you and quite like the Bill Withers cut, posted on March 7, 2015 at 08:20:40

The bottom line is that there are only so many hours in my life I can focus on listening to music and I'd rather hear other stuff such as those SACDs I just ordered from Japan.

The SACD is alive and well in Japan!
