I've been reading about popular modifications to the Oppo BDP-105 and they seem to center on two areas; upgrading the output capacitors and upgrading the power supply diodes on the audio board.

Luckily, the audio output board, on the right side, is easy to access and remove, which makes the upgrades much easier. Just pop the top and disconnect the cables running to the board and you can remove it easily.

Replace the two outside larger caps (100uf Elna Silmics) on the center group (the main 2-channel RCA output jacks) with the caps of your choice. I used a pair of Black Gate NX 47uf caps. You could even use 10uf poly caps if you wanted.

I also replaced the 8 power supply diodes on the board with Fairchild stealth diodes from Percy Audio. You could also use shottky diodes if you like.

I put it all back together and it sounds much more focused, airy and smoother, well worth doing.

If you replaced output capacitors, why did you lower their value. Won't that cause bass to decrease in amplitude? In other words, won't that cause the bass frequency response to roll off at a higher frequency? If these capacitors are 100-µF capacitors, a 10-µF capacitor might cause significant loss in bass. Why did you use and recommend a lower value?

Thanks,
John Elison

The coupling caps are used to block DC on the output where, in reality, little or no DC offset is expected. My bass increased after the mod.

Very cool- Rpower. Do you mod any other cd/dvd players?

Allow me to rephrase my questions:

Why did you use a different capacitance value and why would you recommend replacing a 100-µf capacitor with a 10-µf capacitor?

Thanks,
John Elison

The -3db roll off point is very low even when using a 10uf capacitor, still well below 10 hz...So you can use whatever caps that you have on hand or desire within a wide range and still achieve DC blocking on the outputs.

There is no DC on the output of the Oppo player and there are relays and muting circuits to stop any surges or pops. You can simply remove the coupling caps.

There is a big thread about Oppo mods at diyAudio.com including comments from John Curl who was a consultant on the 105 design (sorry, I don't have a link to hand). IIRC, there should be little/no DC at the output but that could not be guaranteed across all production units so the DC blocking caps are added as a precaution and, again IIRC, he didn't seem too concerned about the caps impacting the sound quality.

I have modded some of my older players in the past, but none for other people...

Very cool, modding players. Which models have you modded?

I have modded Pioneer DV-33, DV-578A, Marantz CD63, Sony DVP-NS500V, DVP-NS775V,Toshiba SD4960; mostly capacitor upgrades.

Very nice! Rpower. Modding cd/sacd players is my 2nd fascination. My 1st fascination is cables/power cords!

It's all about replacing those mediocre output coupling caps with something that meshs well with your system sound. Most roll off the top end to a greater or lesser degree.

I swapped out a pair of Nichicon bipolar coupling caps in my Lepai LP7498E amp last night. Used a pair of Black Gate NXs and really opened up the top end. Much better space and air. Better all round. What fun!

BTW, can you recommend a pair of good sounding affordable speaker cables?

What's the value of the load resistor of those coupling caps? (NT), posted on January 25, 2015 at 12:50:22

I think fantja has a problem talking about speaker cables. I have discovered some very good speaker cables that are extremely affordable. Here is my last discussion with fantja about speaker cables:
