Was chatting with a friend of mine today and he thought it was a likely possibility.

Would be a real shame if that happened. I'm not happy about buying downloads and rarely do it - once or twice a year, maybe.

I wonder what the maintenance cost is on cd replicator plants?

Maybe you should strive to become happy buying downloads. Or else, maybe you should strive to change the direction the world is heading. Whichever seems more rewarding and fulfilling would be my choice. YMMV

Good luck,

Until the mainstream download cites get off their asses and start making available every recording in at least 16 bit full rez files, I won't be partaking in the downloads of today. They rip you off charging full prices for a low rez compressed file. And with internet speeds and huge hard drive space, there is now no reason not to offer an uncompressed file for download. There are a few sites, but you won't find the majority of music available on them. Im thinking when will iTunes make the switch?

I can see them at some point down the road perhaps charging a premium for a physical disc (vs. a download), and, if there is still demand after that keeping it. If not, the answer is obvious. Don't think the end of CD is in the near term (e.g. over the next 5-10 years). But it will probably happen at some point.

Yes they will. It is certainly under discussion and (UK) record industry friends say that some time during the next 36 months is being considered.

However it is not likely that it will happen at a stroke across all music genres and markets

A tipping point needs to be reached. As you will see if you visit the attached URL, in the UK digital sales now constitute 50% of revenues. That is across the industry and I would most certainly be correct in guessing that for some formats ( e.g. pop singles) the digital revenues are an even higher percentage. Those formats/ genres will be the first to give up physical formats. Remember it is not in the record industry's commercial interest to continue to pay for the production and distribution of physical copies if there is an alternative.

It is already the case that many recordings in the classical market are already digital only items ( some small labels and quite a lot of back catalogue from the majors).

Of course not, the end of the CD is not on the radar.

Not just CD, but DVD, SACD (and DVD-A already gone), even BD. With thousands of discs in my library, and thousands invested in bookcases to hold them, I'm quite content to be a living anachronism. Not that I'm unimpressed by the new technology: I've been having fun playing with my "new" Oppo and Samsung Smart TV. But I'm not very impressed with new content, nor am I much interested in paying for the old content yet again - or spending countless hours ripping and organizing it.

I'm pretty sure my 10 year old daughter will never buy a CD...and I will never download music.

I can see it happening, not very soon, but after it happens I would not be surprised if we experience a “CD comeback” similar to what has happened to vinyl.

and it is ok but prefer CD's. A good system can do great with them. I play them through my Chord Hugo and it does wonders. I think a lot of downloaded music is a rip off. You don't know what you are really getting. Often higher res stuff really isn't.
