Is this just a gimmick, or does it indeed allow CDs and SACDs to sound better? Thinking of getting a new 4K receiver and I also like to listen to CD and SACD. So, I might also get that Denon Universal player that also has the Denon Link.

The latest version of Denon Link sends a digital audio signal from a CD player to the Denon AVR, where the DACs convert it to analog. It's supposed to send timing information that reduces jitter, but I have never seen any lab tests that show this to be the case.

Other than the timing information, the digital signal that goes through a Denon Link connection is the same as that which is transmitted via HDMI (and for CDs, the same signal can be transmitted via coaxial or TosLink connection). In all cases, the DAC in the receiver will convert this digital signal to analog.

Personally, I would not choose my components based on the ability to use Denon Link. I have had several generations of Denon AVRs (currently an x4000) that all did a fine job of conversion to analog from either Denon Link or HDMI connections.
