on disc, either RBCD or (less likely) SACD? I would appreciate your recommendation on which version contains the best performance AND especially the best sonics.

I realize that this task is complicated by the fact that some recordings are instumental (cello, guitar, piano), some are vocal, and some are symphonic.

Thanks.

Pete

Do you mean ALL of the Bachianas pieces? There are a bunch of them

would take fewer (and/or multiple discs) to get the best performance/sonics.

If you want to go low-price, this 3-disc EMI set includes 1-8 ($18)

Or you can get all nine on Naxos for $30:

ALternatively, buy the Naxos set and add the disc by Minczuk/ Sao Paulo Orchestra on BIS for $18, or you can get all of them by that group plus all of the Choros (same players, different conductor) on BIS for $53:

The BIS performances are excellent with fine sound. They are all RBCD. Not much of Villa Lobos on SACD.

HIGHLY recommended.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

Every time I see mention of Villa~Lobos I'm reminded of an experience I had
concerning this composer I had 35 or 40 yrs ago.

I had been studying the Classical Guitar at the time & my guitar teacher thought it was
time for me to "tackle" the "Villa~ Lobos Guitar Studies". I was not thrilled with
the technical challenges these studies presented. On more than one occasion I ended
up calling up and canceling my scheduled lesson.

It was a few years before I could even listen to H. Villa~Lobos again . I wonder if students still have a hard time with these studies ? (It was amazing how Pepe Romero played these pieces so fluidly & musically !)
