I bought this on the advice of an out of state buddy whose opinion I trust.

I just unboxed it an hour ago. It's a monster. Big and heavy. And sounds spectacular. It's a relief, actually. I knew it would be stylish and beautifully made and sound good. Didn't know it would sound GREAT, but it only took 20 seconds of my favorite Norah Jones song ('Painter') to realize this was in a different league from what I'm used to.

I've listened to some Lawrence Juber guitar, and right now I'm playing the Art of Fugue performed by the Emerson String Quartet. Everything sounds stunning.

The cats are mostly fascinated by the box. :)

That is one substantial and beautiful CDP. Congratulations!

When you say that it sounds great, can you please let us know the differences that you could make between the old CDP and the new one? I am sure with the new technology, there would be positive changes.

It is too early (probably) to do any mini-review. But I would really like to hear more from your experience on this player. Also try the unit as a DAC for PCM and DSD and post your impressions here. BTW, how have you connected this unit to the preamp - RCA or XLR?

Really a beautiful unit that matches with your AR unit. Have fun and enjoy your music!

Nice looking Yamaha CDP. I still say you need a matching Yamaha Integrated even if that means getting new speakers. ;-)

What CDP did the Yamaha replace? Is that a Marantz CDP? What model?

Didn't have a disc-spinner in that system. Logitech Squeezebox Touch into a remedy re-clocker into a PS NWD.

That was some fine sound there, frankly, I wondered if the Yamaha was going to better it much. Well, it does, and by a pretty wide margin. I'm surprised.

The Marantz is from my hobby shop system, I was just using it in the main setup for a few days. Can't decide if I want to sell it or just keep it around for a spare.

A Yamaha amp with a pair of Stirling LS3/6's would be nice. :)

I use a Denon 100th Anniversary player with my headphone setup. (Hd800's and a tube amp).

As good as my main system is (and it's gotten freakishly good lately) I still listen to my headphones maybe 5-6 hours a week.

Closer to the CD-S3000 than the CD-S2000? , posted on September 1, 2014 at 08:21:32

With the same transport as the CD-S3000 and Sabre DAC, I would bet the CD-S2100 is more similar to it than the CD-S2000. The 2100 uses the ESS 9016S DAC while the 3100 use the 9018S.

Not that it would matter much but I would guess the 9018S has slightly higher specs than the 9016S (does anyone know?). I was very interested in the CD-S3000 when it first came out but it was too expensive. The CD-2100S appears to be a much better value.

The most interesting comparison, at least for me, would be the CD-2100S vs. the Marantz SA-11S3. The SA-11S3 is Marantz's current TOTL player. The Yamaha and Marantz list prices aren't too far apart either. You probably couldn't go wrong with either but which is the champ in the semi-reasonable price category?

An interesting comparison would be the oppo 105 which uses the same DAC.

This Yamaha uses ES9016 Vs the Oppo 105 using ES9018.

The Yamaha CD-S2100 has an advantage of being a DSD DAC. The Marantz cannot do DSD through USB. The Marantz has an advantage that it can be used as a DAC for an iPod.

3* for expensive unit!
Sony TA1 got 4*, as did my Mac C2500 Pre.
They didn't seem too enthused about the Yamaha.
