The Carlos Kleiber orchestral recordings set recently issued on DG Blu-ray has the following resolutions:

2.0 channel LPCM 24bit / 96kHz
5.0 channel DTS HD MA 24bit / 96kHz

which differs from the current entry on SACD.net. Since this is not on any of the packaging nor any of the advertising, it is nice to discover that Universal have finally issued a surround recording on Blu-ray Audio. I own the set and have checked all tracks to make sure this is true.

I hope this encourages others to buy a rather splendid set. I say 'set' because you get 3 RBCDs to use in the car as well as the Blu-ray.

. . . because of the lack of multi-channel tracks. I'm certainly not an unqualified admirer of Carlos, and some of his recordings received some of the worst of the early primitive multi-microphone technology from DG (IMHO), but, based on your report, I may give this set a shot. Thanks again!

Greetings, Dave.

I am a great admirer of what Carlos Kleiber has achieved interpretatively in many recordings. I am also, as you know well, a devotee of Mch classical recordings, as are you. So, can you tell us anything about the sound of the Mch versions of these recordings?

I am not, frankly, expecting recording quality as good as the most modern Mch recordings. BD vs, SACD, I think as we agree, plays little role. But, does the performance plus the engineering and the effect, echoing Chiris's concerns, yield a worthwhile musical experience? We welcome your opinion on that.

I could only compare the sound in the Beethoven performances because I have them on SACD. The Brahms and Schubert I only have as RBCD. I compared just the first movement of Beethoven 5, hearing BD, SACD and then BD again. The sound is as near identical as I can be sure of. If there is a difference it could be down to DSD versus 24/96 PCM. Both sounded very good. The MCH is very effective and adds a valuable spaciousness with quite convincing hall reverberation.

At the same time I have purchased the new Blu-ray/CD DG Karajan Beethoven Symphonies (1963 issue) recordings on Blu-ray. These are stereo only, possibly because the older tapes were not suitable for reprocessing into MCH. This set is also very fine on a musical level and I do not regret buying it.
