.dsf file experiments, comparing WAV to DSD (same master)

check this out

my first album:

https://archive.org/details/blacklab

download the WAV Files

and here it is in DSD (.dsf)

https://archive.org/details/bullethead-blacklab_DSD

nothing changed with the master, however when I archived the .WAV to DSD it sounds better, more pleasing to the ear and the mind. There is something going on with DSD that is in my opinion as I see it subjectively much more natural to the ear in playback compared to PCM.

... How do you know your mind isn't playing tricks on you?

PCM sounds good-Mind Playing Tricks.
DSD sounds good-Mind Playing Tricks.
Vinyl sounds good-Mind Playing Tricks.
That's how it works, who cares?

Bullethead, where does it sound better? What DAC? Why don't you think it's the DAC being able to playback DSD better than it plays back WAV (all DACS have sweetspots)? Why do you think it's the format?

I love DSD too, but I'm trying to ask questions about your experiment. On my Meitner (one bit chip technology; everything gets converted to DSD128) of course DSD would sound better than wav.. the DAC has less to do once it receives a DSD bitstream/signal. If you do the same for a multibit DAC you might get different results with the same two files.

this is realtime DSD to PCM conversion and it sounds better, posted on April 7, 2014 at 13:27:54
I don't have a DSD dac, conversion was done to PCM

out to Audioengine DAC and then the DSD out to the same DAC, DSD sounds better. I was using Foobar2000 music player for windows as the source for playback.

My comparisons were between DSD downloads vs hi-res PCM (96/24 and 192/24) from HDtracks. While I'm not certain that the masters were the same, I found that in general for the few samples I had, the DSD files sounded a little 'softer' with some 'edge' polished away.

So is that good or bad? Is it 'correct' or just different? I've never been one to complain about listener fatigue and I can see the attraction to DSD's smoothness for those who do.

In some cases I want that 'edge' that DSD seems to soften, sometimes unnaturally to my ears. I don't want my Led Zeppelin and much of my other rock and blues 'smooth' if it was not the artist's intent. ;-)

DSD is fun to play with but in the end, I have found that good 24/96 is sufficient for my needs. Your preference and YMMV.
