Hello all,

Well, I just discovered after being away for a week that upon returning my scd-1 will not play SACD hybrids in SACD mode but will play them in CD mode. SACD only discs will play fine in SACD mode and standard red book CDs play fine in regular CD mode. Player sounds good and everything operates as normal except for the situation mentioned above.

Help, anyone, what gives? If important, I do leave my player on 24/7 but do power down for away trips. Pretty bummed, I do like this player, have had it for a long time and it has served me well so any suggestions that might help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bill

There are more knowledgeable people here, but I can share my experience.

I recall a few years back having a problem somewhat like yours. Although at this point I don't recall exactly the symptoms.

I took the cover off my SCD-777 (being careful with the cables) and blew the dust off the laser. The player has been working perfectly since then.

Don't know if this is your problem, but it doesn't take much time. Just a bit of care.

I have mentioned this before on this forum, and I offer it once again. Read no further if you have been here before. I had the same problem years ago and fixed it, similar to Audio Snob, by vacuuming out the transport bay with a crevice tool, paying particular attention to the right hand side where the laser assembly is located. It is risk free and worth a try. You can escalate to Audio Snob's fix if the vacuum fails. And rather than risk a botched job from the Laredo Sony gorillas, you can send it to Bill Thalmann at Music Technology in Virginia, who has acquired a very good rep for SCD-1 and 777 repair and mods. I'll bet he would be happy to talk to you on the phone about the problem. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks guys, good advise. I'll give it a try tomorrow and follow up with the results. The dust thing after so many years makes a lot of sense.

Ok, sad to report, cleaning the lens didn't work. I even removed the top as per instructions from Bill over at Music Tech and used Qtips with alcohol but to no avail.

Anyone have a lead on a new sony laser? If I can find one cheap enough I'd swap out the old laser which is most likely the problem, again on the advise of Bill Thalmann.

I'd like to thank those that offered suggestions and Bill from Music Tech for his time today otp helping me run through a few things .

So again, if anyone knows of a SCD-1 laser laying around in a drawer, let me know or better yet let them know i'm looking.

Bill

Bill Thalmann has worked on my SCD-1. I'm very happy with his work. He also suggested leaving it turned on except for long durations of not using it.

Hope you find your laser.

Sorry for the late response, we got a new addition to the family a Couple days ago and I've been really busy with the little gal. Her name is Ruby and she's an 8 wk old boxer, just as cute as a button, but in need of a whole lot of my time so I have not been online for a while.

Anyway, the SCD-1 is off the rack, with the Oppo 105 in replacement and after a fair amount of break in I am very satisfied with its performance especially when one takes into account its price point. Wont go into a full review, plenty of that on the net, but will say 2 of the main standouts for me when compared to my SCD-1 are its organic analog like presentation and its low end freq response are supurrb! Conversely, upper freq response is adequate, not stellar by any means but then again the SCD-1 use to drive me crazy after a long play sessions, I don't get this with the 105, so for me its a welcome adjustment that cured me of the high frequency sizzle blues!

One footnote, sad to say I will most likely never have built quality like the SCD-1 again, and to think it was built in Japan. Nice work Sony, bravo!
