After hearing this for the first time yesterday, I am ready to agree with Rick Gardner that this is a good one. It's a cross-polination of rock and techno comparable to Jeff Beck's recent work. The sound is extraordinary--like having the guitar plugged into your head. As Rick said, the uptempo cuts on this are heavy and driving but much of the album is very mellow with melodies almost reminiscent of Pink Floyd used as vehicles for ballads. As with the Beck material, my only complaint is that it sits on the fence between rock and techno. I don't see how to make the hybridization more successful, but somehow I would like to hear a full fledged journey into either genre--perhaps not in every cut on the album, in some tunes. Maybe on Satriani's next one. . .
