I now have 600hrs. into my player on cd only and granted the change did come but not as huge as a lot claim. I now am using it as a transport to a CAL SIGMA II dac and it really sounds better than the stand alone player. Anybody have similar results? I just believe that after 600hrs the stand alone player is what it is. Just my opinion.

I, too, get better Red Book playback through an external DAC than through the 777 itself. But I'm using a DAC (Counterpoint/Alta Vista Audio DA-10A) for which recent upgrades to the power supply and Rapture DAC card cost within $250 of my total outlay for the 777. If I factor in the original cost of the external DAC prior to the upgrades, it's not difficult to understand that the 777's CD playback may suffer in the comparison. Given the total package you get (SACD _and_ CD playback) with the 777 at a street price of between $1500 and $1600 US, the 777 still represents good value, in my opinion.

The 777 is sensitive to AC power. Try checking out cords, plc, isolation transformers, etc.

An isolation xfmr is cost effective and works wonders. 95% of what a PS audio will do for this unit.

It is interesting. I compared SCD777's DAC to CAL ALpha (with Mullard tubes!) and preferred the SCD-777 as a CD player to Alpha DAC with 777 as a transport. Yes, Alpha DAC gave that tube lush sound which I always loved but at the expense of refinement and subtleties of sound which once experienced I did not want to trade. I though you should go to much more expensive DAC (like Dodson) to improve 777's.

I agree, pleasing SCD-777 with clean power (good AC cord and AC conditioner) and playing with various isolation platforms will improve the sound dramatically and then you might not need to buy an external DAC to it. I think that the 777 DAC is very satisfying.

My experience has been quite different. I did own a Cal Sigman II DAC, but sold it. I found that while it does have a bold, rounded tube sound, that, for me, it seems much less refined and detailed than the SCD 777ES - I actually find the Sony to be sweeter sounding (and that is without doing any tweaks yet). I think system matching can be crucial with the different "sounds" of different DAC's. I can imagine other systems than my own in which I would be less pleased with the Sony's sound.
Also, I have compared it to many comparably priced CDP's, and it stands as my favorite in the price range (but once again, for my system).

Hello blackpixel:

try j & r musicworld in NYC. You have to call to get the price. The 777ES is not on their website. Also Oade Brothers in Georgia sell the 777ES at $1500!

Let us know how you like it when you get it, I bought mine at $1600 from j and r.
