Sometimes I don't bother to sign in but these divebomb ads now prompt me to sign in immediately, so they are serving some purpose.

Cannot afford? Are you not a software engr? I read in today's WSJ that avg salary for a Sr. Software engr @ Google is ~ $250K, @ Fakebook ~ $200K, etc. Seems that wages in that ballpark would allow for discretionary expenses.

The ads are targeted to what you view online. It looks at your cookies and provides similar. Just saying.....

Umm, I would have a serious look at what is on YOUR computer. YOUR computer causes more popups than websites, on average. At one time I was getting them on Craigslist but once I cleaned up my PC they stopped. Craigslist has no popups so if get them there, it is on your PC.

All y'all probably got newer OSes than I but the thing to do is not necessarily run a virus scan, but to find out where to add/remove programs. Remove what you do not recognize, but be careful. An AV program will not do that. You could have received an automatic update that had the shit in it. Do not allow automatic updates - even Windows. Make it prompt you and when you see what it is get on Google and find out what it is. Ad that does not mean accept it just because it is from Microsoft. This free Win 10 bullshit is bullshit. Always remember that if you are not the customer you are the product.

You would think people would REALIZE why this stuff appears on their screens but they go ahead and report it anyway. Mindlessly?

...BH claims his profession is IT. Isn't it reasonable to assume that an IT professional would be both aware of how this stuff gets on screen AND of the means of preventing it from occurring? I certainly do! IOW, I believe BH posts mostly for his and maybe our entertainment. Look at the number of responses his posts usually generate. It's HUGE!!! And sometimes entertaining.

Needs lots of tweaks to avoid crap. Set all browsers to not accept third party cookies and delete all cookies when you close the browser.
Windows 10 has amazing power in its default installed scheme. There is a ton of crap that needs to be turned off. The only way to avoid automatic updates now is to identify your Wi-Fi connection as metered. If you hard wire through an Ethernet cable too bad, Microsoft has control and settings will change with auto updates. One of the defaults allows apps to send emails from your email account!

targeted ads are not totally evil.. I am currently looking for speaker options and recently got an ad for a new Legacy model which looks pretty cool, maybe perfect for my requirements..

I possibly would not have known about it otherwise..

"The ads are targeted....."

They absolutely are not. This line gets used every time the ads are mentioned here. AA is the ONLY site I get ads like the ones mentioned. So I see AA as being the common denominator with regards to ads for the European "lady company" sites.
