A recent purchase got me to wondering what portable radios others here might be listening to. So I started this thread for afficianatos to post pictures of their pride and joys.

My recent boom box purchase, a Panasonic RX-5080, and my holy grail National RX-7000

Some of the old "ghetto blasters" were pretty amazing, posted on September 18, 2016 at 22:19:09
I don't know about sound quality but by the early 1980's they surely reached their pinnacle of size and power. Some were so big that kids took to carting them around in stolen grocery carts.

they sat next to them playing full blast on such places as bank steps. Just to piss everyone off.

What more could you ask for? You want to hear the utmost in detail while you're getting your knob gobbled by a babbling brook? Want to hear true piano and string tones while you're plowing a cutie in the shade of an oak tree on the banks of lake?

Not all were created equally. Once feeling the weighted tuning knob on the RX-7000 this becomes clear.

I knew there were some good ones..., posted on September 19, 2016 at 04:44:18
... but the few "good" ones were rare as hen's teeth.

My first real "stereo" was a medium-sized Sony boombox. It had good tone for a boombox (or so I thought), and so got me interested in listening to the real and better stuff later on in life. I suspect that many of us started out with table radios of one sort or another.

I suspect that boomboxes like the upscale RX-7000 were not "ghetto blasters". Probably used in sporting boats and fancy vacation cabins? So it's nice to hear that you're into the collectibles.

BTW, what did the RX-7000 cost back in the day?

Didn't purchase it new, and as its Panasonic's Asian branch I'm not sure if it ever sold here. But from the info I've been able to obtain it was anywhere from $495 - $849, and pristine units now sell for $$$$$$$$. Mine is not pristine, needed a bit of work, but is fully functional now. The picture I posted was from the internet, not mine. It has inputs on the back for phono, aux, and a line out for a power amp, it's not your typical boom box, and why I'm reluctant to use it as a job site radio lol, hence my recent purchase of its smaller sibling, the RX-5080.

In the 80's. The National is very cool. I am going to build one from one inch soild cherry, very excellent six in driver with soft dome and third order w/Zoebel crossover. I plan to power it with a class d with built in Bluetooth receiver and aux in, no tuner.

I think there are far fewer murders due to earphone use than boomboxes.
Just my opinion. LOL
