That young girl looks like the one I saw starring in a tampon commercial........

Compare that "little girl" with Jim, Robert, Roger, or the Boss.

Pretty damm sad......

In fifty years the kids buying his music will be us now. You mock him just like our parents mocked most of the people you pictured. After all fifty years ago rock and roll was the devil's music and it was just noise to our parents. The more things change the more they stay the same. In 50 years he will be very much talked about and we won't know it because we will be dead.

Of course much like some of the people you pictured....he will likely be long dead too. When does he turn 27?

As far as I am concerned, the most meaningful and impressive Billboard achievement OF ALL TIME belongs to:

Mickey Newbury-still (as far as I know), the only songwriter ever to have songs in the Top 10 on four different Billboard charts at the same time (three #1s and one #5).

Your point is well taken. I was not the one that who pictured those others. I was talking about the Beatles longevity after 50 years!

...maybe about 10 years ago when she was 15, I took my daughter to see Steve Winwood.

He played "Gimme Some Lovin'" which was 40 years old.

I also took her to see Paul McCartney who played some of her Beatles' favorites.

She loves music an I asked her if any of the groups she listens to would be around 40 years from now.

She said it wasn't likely since the groups don't last more than a couple of years.

Beiber? I had already forgotten he was a singer and not just a famous jerk until the new album came out.

Snippet: As of 2008, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon has been on the charts for over 1,630 weeks, or approximately 31 years. Consecutively, the album spent a record 773 weeks on the Billboard 200. The other weeks were spent on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart.

Sure sounds that way to me.

How could anyone listen to that stuff, beats me. I like pop music, but not auto-tuned pop.

I hate auto tune too but it is in fashion. I remember my parents hearing my Led Zeppelin records back in the 70s and saying "That is just noise." "He is just screaming! Anyone can do that!" "That crap isn't music, it's just a fad. It will be long forgotten years from now."

This sure does seem like the same thing all over again.

Nope, I don't like JB. Not one bit. But I am not going the route of my parents and dismiss him out of hand. Clearly he is speaking to a large body of music fans in a way that other artists are not. What it is I know not, but there has to be something there. And anyone who gains this much popularity for such an extended time will be remembered by the generation of fans that put him where he is now.

It's the difference between a few buttons on a phone and going to the store and buying a physical copy of a single. No band could ever issue singles of an entire album in the physical medium era. That's what was quaintly referred to as an album.

Newbury wrote many songs that would be recorded by singers and songwriters such as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Bill Monroe, Johnny Rodriguez, Hank Snow, Ray Charles, Tony Rice, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tammy Wynette, Ray Price, Don Gibson, Brenda Lee, Charlie Rich, Lynn Anderson, David Allan Coe, Sammi Smith, Joan Baez, Tom Jones, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Steve Von Till, B.B. King, Linda Ronstadt, Dax Riggs, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Bill Callahan among many others.

but it is a popular "sound" in pop music today so one cant say for sure that the use is due to the singer's inability to sing in tune

Over 90 percent of the pop music put out over the past five years has been Auto-Tuned..... Bieber is just one of many.........

It has gotten to the point where it's difficult to find pop music in recent time that is NOT Auto-Tuned.

It's a sad truth..... Performers and producers do it because everybody else does it...... The whole industry has become a fiefdom of sheep.

In any endeavor, the one thing that destroys more performers from sustained success is the expectation or planning of it. If you just do your thing, and you're actually good, the success will take care of itself.

...would be if I ever heard any of his music played like Muzak-on hold on a phone, or in an elevator-And then guiltily hummed the tune over and over in my head. It's more than just a quantifiable projection. Great pop seems to reinvent itself in other places. As of yet, i haven't heard his music anywhere, except maybe to sell musical widgets on network tv. Apologies if I've merely parroted any already posted responses.

He just turned 21.

Who knows what he's going to do? In 30 years he's only going to be 51.

A lot can happen. If I'm not mistaken he's got talent and a decent singing voice. Will he decide to hone that talent or will he "Different Stokes" himself? Time will tell.
