A couple of rooms from Sat. VPI mag drive TT. This played through Parasound amps and Joseph Audio speakers and sounded very good. The new Von Shweikert speakers sounded excellent, but I wish they were in a bigger room.Despite that limitation ,the adjustability of the on board bass amps kept them from overloading the room. I didn't spend as much time as I would like to have, but it was still fun.
I listened to the YG acoustics Sonja 1.2 and was really suprised. I heard a pair of YGs a few years ago and found them well resolved, but clinical spounding. These 1.2s are a big improvement. They sounded really nice with good texture yet still have excellent resolution.
Well I'm not a pro reviewer, so that's about it.

Honestly , I'm not sure. They were a three way design with a separate tweeter/mid enclosure and wooffer section. They reminded me a lot of the Von Shweikert VR-4s.

The VPI/Joseph Audio room was fairly large ,about 25'x40' or so.The equipment was along the short wall with the speakers well into the room(Probably 8' from the front wall and 2' from the sides). There were several rows of chairs toward the back of the room. There were some room treatments.

At past RMAFs the presenters really encouraged guests to bring their own music to listen to in the various rooms.Although no one really denyed people from putting something on, the presenters in the rooms I went to mostly had music selected that they demoed in a sequence that was pre planned.
In most of the rooms I visited they had turntables or music servers which doesn't really give you the choice of putting on a CD. I'm not sure if this was by design or just a sign of the times.

How to get a comparison between E6 and F5 ? It may be worth the extra money.

Went to RMAF and while it is always a good experience I came away feeling that it is not a realistic place to evaluate audio gear and problems facing the industry were obvious. Cramming heat generating electronics into small hotel rooms where the AC is turned off and adding dozens of sweaty bodies leads to a hot and stuffy experience where one doesn't stop to linger. Also the unrealistic matching of components is hardly the best way to evaluate anything. A $10,000 amp using $3000 worth of cables is NOT the way most of us will ever use a pair of $2500 speakers and while it may generate attention it is certainly not real world. Other observations include the lack of youth coming into the hobby. Most of the attendees (including yours truly) is an older white dude with graying hair and going forward there simply aren't enough of us to keep this industry healthy. While Can Jam brought in some younger listeners this "hobby" should be very alarmed about it's ability to survive without new and younger buyers coming in.

This hobby HAS to broaden out to remain viable.

It is just boxes and wires: To a Geek with money, yeah, pretty fascinating ;-)

Paul was using YGs for their demo but I don't know which model. I heard the new BHK Signature amps at Newport and was favorably impressed by them. Not saying the YGs were not improved but the front end could account for some of your more favorable impression.

Many Thanks! Mark-

regarding the JA loudspeakers, I have auditioned both, Pulsar & Perspective models. They deliver the best vocals out there, the trade-off,
is that both models are slightly rolled of (small drivers).

I would drool to demo the Pearl2 or Pearl3, larger drivers, that present a larger sound.

I agree with your comments regarding the demographics of this year's RMAF. I was there as well. What I found equally alarming was that not only did the show exhibit its usual lack of attendee diversity, but that attendance overall seemed to be down. There were a few times on Sunday where the hallways seemed to be nearly devoid of visitors. There were also more empty rooms than I remember seeing in the seven other RMAF shows I've attended.

It caused me to wonder briefly why I attend these shows. I gave it some thought on the flight back to NYC and came up with this:

1 - New music. In all the shows I've attended I've never failed to come back with a list of music new to me that I intended to add to my library. In that respect this year's show was no different.

2 - These shows provide me the opportunity to talk face-to-face with equipment designers. One of the greatest joys for me is discussing with a designer why he (or she) made the decisions they did. That is especially interesting when you're in the same room with that piece of equipment. The passion and the knowledge some of these people bring to their craft and being able to participate, however briefly, in that thought process is worth the trip. The internet just can't do that.

3 - For me, these shows provide a sense of community. Sitting in a room with like-minded others and experiencing great music played back on a great system is fun and immensely enjoyable. It's not live music but it'll do just fine.

4 - Where and how else can I possibly hear so many different systems? The fact that I'll never own 99.9% of it doesn't matter.

I'm hoping that the decline I sensed in exhibitor and visitor attendance this year is not a pattern. I know, there are other shows but RMAF is something special. I hope it survives and prospers.

Sorry, I can't remember for sure. I don't think it was PS audio, though (GTT comes to mind, though). I was so suprised by the YGs that I didn't pay attention to the associated equipment. I guess I should have.

There were a few hot chicks in short black dresses in the lobby as I was heading out. I guess the could have been hookers, but they all had basically the same outfit. Mabey that'll get more people in the door.:-)

Perhaps those are the "high-end" girls I've heard so much about. They plug and unplug glitzy interconnects for a living.

What you describe is not unique to RMAF but most audio shows.

I'm not worried about the state of the hobby but I might be if I were a manufacturer or dealer.

I believe these are the booth babes people are referring to. I must say that's the first time I see both babes at an audio show.

Somebody said earlier they might be streetwalkers. lol. First - not at audiophile show and second, real life ones don't look that good :)

Good RMAF show this year. Absolute Sound has a nice collection of reports on it, where said picture was found.

Enjoy.
