It's going to be a high end Boom Box with Bluetooth. It will be based on the Lepai LP7498E Class D amp w/built in Bluetooth. The speakers are very high end although most will not have heard of them. They are the Oz Audio CS-180 coaxial w/outboard crossover. 3rd order w/Zoebel. Crossover in the pic is not the same it is rectangular but seems very similar circuit/component wise. Oz has been out of biz for about 8 years although someone seems to have bought their name and is selling junky Pyramid, Boss type speakers with their name. The only thing I heard close to these Oz coaxials at the time was a Kef 6.5 coax w/outboard crossover. Since then Focal has nice stuff too.

I will be using some of the 1" and 1.5" thick Cherry I have from a tree that fell 8 years ago. So you get the basic idea from the crude drawing. I will stain the cherry and it will look nice. The handle will be from a small maple or ash tree for strength and likely about 1.5" in diameter.

The "box" platform piece of wood is going to be 35" wide with the boom box atop it about 32" wide. The amp in the center is about 5 inches wide and the leftover space on each side will allow for the speaker enclosures to be about 12-13 wide interior volume when you subtract out the four pieces of one inch thick wood.

So now that you have the basics let me tell you what the numbers on the drawing are for. 1 represents the cherry wood and it will be stained. 2 represents the speakers of course. I'd like help here. There are poly coned, rubber surround with a coaxially mounted soft dome with a protective metal grill. So they come with kind of ungly black metal car audio grills. I could leave them off but then there is potential driver damage. I don't really want to use grill cloth either. Maybe the pro audio looking grill at the bottom here is OK? I need help here.

3 represents the handle and its supports. Since they'll be load bearing
a potential of 30-40 pounds "If" two batteries are installed it needs to be robust and strong. As either Maple or Ash I will clear coat that and it will look whitish in color.

The ? is the big question mark. The center area will measure about 5" wide, about 8" deep and will be about 10 inches high including the area for the Lepai which is 1.25" high. Should that front just be stained cherry? Do you think a headphone jack should be installed? I really don't know how to dress that area.

The battery compartment will hold 2-12V batteries connected in series. As to the back of the unit I thought I'd have one piece of wood all the way across the back and put the removable battery door in the front. Not sure on that so input requested. Last is there are RCA jacks on the Lepai on the back w/ the speaker terminals and DC input jack for battery or AC adapter input. Showing them and giving access to the rear panel would be easier but not look as nice.

So any ideas are appreciated/ LWR inspired me to do this project from a post earlier in the year. Drawing not really to scale but the best I can do. We'll have a very good sounding rustic boom box w/Bluetooth. Thanks in advance!

Checkout these batteries if you want to save on weight. They are a fraction of the weight of common sealed lead acid batteries and have much longer idle shelf life. The downside is they cost quite a bit more and require a special charger.

Is this project of yours 'just for grins' for the fun of it, or are you trying to create a product?

I have one of the 24Ah batteries for portable HAM radio use. Saving weight in the backpack makes a huge difference.

All current respectable boom boxes have them.

Since it's a boom box, some alligator leather would look fresh in that center part (?).

Thanks Abe, its a one and only mostly for grins. It will allow me to use these speakers I've had over 10 years. Batteries look good.

I've got great speakers in a proper sized box with a real amp unlike boomboxes that won't do 10 watts clean most of the time. I had a Sony with a sub, this will sound much better all the way around and have good bass. If I had the space and the speaker and amp I'd add a sub. Right now I nly have 10 and 12 inch aluminum cone subs.

I was thinking of some sort of material or leather. I'm going for a rustic look. Maybe leather and studs like cowboy chaps. Thanks!
