Just finished ripping Sibelius The Symphonies - Tone Poems on DGG. Heard this on Tidal and had to buy it. Ive dropped Tidal due to poor sound. (btw)

My other fav at the moment is Alfred Brendel Beethoven Complete Piano Sonatas and Concertos.

Most coveted box set: Julian Bream Complete album collection

What are you fav classical box sets? Im looking to expand my horizons and these box sets are quite inexpensive these days.

Thanks!!!

I have picked up a few at Arkiv Music sales - and been quite pleased-
The L'Oiseau-lyre set is WONDERFUL - a beautiful catalog
I also picked up a Decca Collection that is mostly 19th & 20th Century music- very good - from what I have heard - have not sat to hear all of it (50+ cds)
20th-Century Classics / Marriner, ASMF - is a nice set -

While you always get something that you might not otherwise have chosen- I have been quite happy so far - and the pricing make these a no-brainer...

Happy Listening

All time fav is my Wendy Carlos boxed set, but it's out of print.

which Bendel do you have. I have the middle of his three sets on Decca with Haitink. Like it a great deal. For Beethoven Piano Sonatas I like Annie Fisher, Arrau on Phillips from the 70's, Gulda, Gilels partial set on DG, Kempff (have the Stereo, would like the mono as well). Have Paul Lewis and feel it is nice but overrated.

Bax by Handley on Chandos.
Beethoven Sonatas for Violin & Piano by Faust and Melnikov on Harmonia Mundi
Prokofiev Piano Concertos byu Bavouzet & Noseda on Chandos

A couple of cheapies with excellent performances and adequate audio -
Strauss Complete Orchestral works by Kempe on Werner
Dvorak Symphonic Works by Neuman on Supraphon.

Don't overlook the large Mercury Box sets which cover most of the popular classic music in at least good performances and audio.!

Look for boxed sets by Bruno Walter - Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms. A great conductor. I second your remarks on Brendel. Some of Time-Life sets are excellent. I was lucky to inherit about 30 of these and have been surprised at their quality. The nice thing about box sets that I noticed is that often many of the records appear to have been rarely played and I have several records that are close to mint.

I have to second that L'Oiseau-Lyre box set. For clarification and for anyone who may find this post in the archives at some point I am assuming that you refer to Florilegium Series "The Baroque Era". I am making this point as there are two box sets to follow , The Classical Era and a pre-baroque box.

I also highly recommend the Constantin Silvestri box on EMI.

The Artist's Choice Collection
Beethoven Complete Piano Sonatas and Concertos (DECCA)
Schubert Piano Works (DECCA)

Normally I play these works in random and in the morning. A great way to start the day!!!!

Thanks for your reply and interest.
