In my experiences, most changes make things worse..... But I won't comment on this until it happens.

This has been a "bad" scene since eBay brought on Praypal.
I thought the proverbial "monopoly" in business-based practice was illegal?

I wonder if they were told to separate to stop a monopoly ruling. I hope this means that one will be able to use another form of payment rather than PayPal now.

Monopolies are not illegal. But a company in a monopoly position is not allowed to abuse its monopoly powers to further the growth of the monopoly (e.g. by preventing competition).

Paypal doesn't have a monopoly on online payments anyway. But eBay may be considered to have a monopoly or near-monopoly on user-to-user online sales. I agree that it's better for them to be separate companies, but the reasons for this are not monopoly-related.

They may be separating as such to a formal business degree, but a notice recently sent out by Ebay clearly states that they will maintain the ability to suggest to paypal various methods of handling issues that occur related to ebay/paypal transactions. Doesn't sound very separated to me.

It's always about the money. Separation will lead to more of it for both companies. That's my take.

Well, eBay started out as a cash -only business. Then, it allowed cash, check or money order between buyer & seller. And then came praypal...

You've always been able to use other payment methods. They banned cash/MO (at least in principle, e.g. you can't advertise it), but you can take credit cards through other methods (e.g. directly, if you have a merchant account, etc.)

Hopefully, eBay will take a page from Amazon's book and return to Customer Service!
