I am looking to connect my home with an updated home audio system. All the rooms are already prewired with speaker and volume control knobs. The speaker connections in the basement are ready and prepare to be connected to preamp or amp system. I am possibly looking to have a multi-zone system, but i am looking for new technology to play digitial media via iPad or tablet via home wireless network. Also to have the option to play CDs from receiver and CD layer in basement.

I am not sure what components i need to achieve this. ANy ideas would be welcome. Thank you.

I haven't heard too much bad stuff about them on this board! Best Buy carries it. It is not Hi-End, but you won't care unless your into Hi-End.

As amplification I recommend the Parasound Zamp.

I recently bought one s/h for my daughter's University system and it is a stunningly good amp for its size, its price and in general.
I liked it so much I bought two more even though I have no idea yet what to do with them but for £40 each I couldn't possibly say no but even new at full retail they are more than worth it!

Ironhorse....you have to decide on the kind of listening you do. I too have speakers all over the house and at the pool and patio. I listen to music (Spotify, Pandora, etc) in a way that the music is just in the air and making life pleasant. For this I have a Denon AVR X3100 that has a capability and performance that is wonderful. I control everything from a phone app... For "serious" listening, I have my audiophile approved high end system properly set up .....but that is a whole different kind of listening. To try to combine these systems will ultimately be a compromise to each kind of experience.

I recently purchased a Marantz SR7009 HT receiver far many of the uses you cited. Fully controllable from my iPad (app), can power 3 zones and each zone can play a unique source, Bluetooth connection to handheld devices, wifi and Ethernet connections to a home network, can read files from a USB source.

We will move to a renovated house later this year and this receiver will be the core component for whole house media distribution. 7.1 HT in the Den, separate zone coverage for the kitchen and DR, outside. Connection to my network for streaming media (love Internet radio), and content from a NAS. All managed from my phone or iPad, and easy enough for my wife to easily use.

Other manufacturers produce receivers and pre-processors with the same capabilities, so you have choices other than Marantz if you are so inclined.

Best, Ross

The G1 system controller from ELAN will do everything you mentioned and much more if you choose. It's an IP based product that allows you to have multi-source control at you fingertips on any smart phone, tablet, computer or wall touch screen. Wall touch screens are wireless and can be mounted virtually anywhere. Want a lil lighting control some day? Install a few Lutron Radio RA II switches, tie into the G1 and now you have that on any device. No stand alone receiver or amps or ? will give you these kinds of options and control. Forget the dinosaur wall volume control knobs, pick up your phone and crank up any or all zones!
