I'm no expert but Little Five Points offers both Criminal Records & Wax n' Facts record stores along with a nice, funky vibe & eclectic shopping. While you're there you can go to the Vortex for a great burger as well.
Happy Hunting!

If your in the Athens area, Wuxtry in downtown Athens is a goowon.

Of the two, Wuxtry Athens is by far my favorite. Wuxtry in Decatur has a large Jazz/Blues section if that's your thing and is also good.

Just bought a decently rare, mint copy of Buckingham/Nicks for my wife from the Athens store, who's a huge Fleetwood Mac fan at Wuxtry Athens. She was stoked.

Plus Athens kicks ass, so there is that too.

Between downtown Athens and Little Five Points/Atlanta, you would be spitting distance to a dozen or so really fine small venues. So don't forget to schedule in some live music. And of course a Terrapin (Athens) and a 420 (Atlanta).

NE metro ATL,

Godzooks! Looked up the website and it's now renames Hi-Fi Buys. Rejuvenating the name of the original "Highish" End stores in the 80's 90's before Tweeter etc. bought them.

Hey Tom, Welcome to the hood. I drove over from Athens and came to one of your demos afew years back. It was in the parking lot of a Humongous Church. I'm sure your used to it but speakers that loud in the middle of the day causes quite a raucous. Dogs were barking, car alarms were going off, kids were coming out of their classrooms at a near by school,a fire truck and a police cruiser showed up... it was total mayhem. And everyone in your firm looked on w great approval and I was grinning ear to ear in disbelief something that loud could sound so good.... pretty funny stuff.

Gainesville pretty much has two things- Lake Lanier (a fantastic lake btw) and Chickens. I haven't heard much in the live music department but I really dunno. 30 Minutes to Athens, Atlanta and North Georgia Mountains.

RE: Audio Alternative in Lilburn, posted on April 10, 2015 at 05:52:18
There were two Hi Fi Buys companies at one time. The one in Atlanta (and Nashville) were independent of the Hi Fi Buys gobbled up by Tweeter before it died.

The store in Nashville sold Wilson Audio and Macintosh, etc. I am not sure of the exact relationship between the two companies.

I notice Audio Alternative is still in the store name. FWIW, Audio Alternative has a huge collection of classic audio gear...drool city.

Worth a trip if you have time.

Rejuvenating the name of the original "Highish" End stores in the 80's 90's...

The original Atlanta based Hi-Fi Buys on Peachtree St in Buckhead dates back to the early 70s owned by Mel somebody. Just down the street from the Buckhead Cinema and the Sears (both long gone now). And near another audio shop, the "Old Counselor" Lee Kramer's High Fidelity SSS.

I've known Alan at AA for years and purchased lots of gear from him. Nice guy.

Hi
Hey I was down at the shop for that demo I think. See if it was the one in the link. This was the first public demo of a J-3, with an 812 subwoofer.
I saw a guy walking around with some kind of tiny video camera (I thought might be an I phone).
Later he posted the link for the video and I thought captured the sound pretty well. He didn't post the part with the police, don't know if he caught that, that was embarrassing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MOG_sPejGA

Part of the reason it was turned up "kind of loud" was that out in the field were a number of stadium related people. One way these full range point sources are different compared to line arrays, that they sound "the same" everywhere in front even far away. To see if that was really true, two car loads of them went off to find a road far enough away to hear that. Somebody else took a video there, you can't see the speaker but it's to the side of the cream colored building.

It was worth the citation from the po, the demo lead to providing speakers for Tiger Stadium / LSU and Spartan stadium in Michigan and those lead to other large stadiums.
Here are a couple video's I took at those during the set up. The speakers are in the scoreboard in both systems, LSU being the more powerful, hits 105dBA slow at the farthest seat at onset of limiting and is -3dB at 27Hz.

Thanks for the tip! It will be a few weeks before I am out exploring and done moving but on the other hand, I don't have any idea where anything is, so it will be an adventure. Well, I haven't moved in nearly 40 years so it's already an adventure haha.

Hi
Well we make full range "single acoustic source" horns and subwoofers for use in large spaces.
We have taken kind of a different approach, we don't advertise much so we are not well known outside of commercial sound and there our sales come mostly from word of mouth.

The object of the full range speakers is to radiate as if they only had a single crossover-less driver in a large constant directivity horn, even though the box may contain many drivers, in one case over 100. In most of these, over a broad band width, if you put a square wave in, you see a recognizable square wave with a microphone.

I like to think of our approach as large scale hifi, especially compared to the concert style line arrays usually used in stadiums etc.

In a reply above, i posted a few links to videos which captured the sound, if you have headphones, try one or two.

Here is the (needs to be updated) web site with the products and some jobs and face book page (more up to date) if interested.
Best,
Tom

Used to live in the Atlanta area 5 yrs ago. Used to visit Audio Alternatives often, good people. Never pulled the trigger on anything major, just cables, audiophile vinyl, and accessories. I just checked and this other shop I did business with is still around; Sound Image. Great gear and knowledgable salesguys. I bought an Arcam CD23T and a new dustcover for my LP12 from them.

I found the studio in back by accident after looking thru the dollar bins at he front of the store. Lovely stuff - Ortofon accessories, Rogue, Pro-Ject turntables (I think), lots of great gear that a soon-to-be-second time father could only look at after he picked out a double-armful of records. Even in a small space, the setups looked and sounded great (if maybe not super-optimal). Owner was really nice, very knowledgeable and willing to chat. I definitely want to go and see the new place now.

While it's not CDs per se, most vinyl stores trade in used cds too. Not sure if The Vinyl District app has been mentione elsewhere, but it's pretty neat. Where-ever you are, use the app and it shows you where the closest used vinyl shops are.
