I saw this room online and thought to myself....what a pain in the ass layout to put a stereo in.

Not that the owner would GAS.

Just sayin'.

Laid out for HT. The architect should be hung for creating the column where the television is sitting.

And you just *know* that women everywhere are thinking "What a great room" while we menfolk are silently cringing. About the only thing I like about that room is the paint, the dark bottom section combined with the light top looks very classy.

I'm just about to paint my condo and this is almost exactly what I was considering doing...

It's a short wall, not a column. Great place to put a TV, although I think it could be a little wider.

Without that wall, it's just one big, very difficult to use room. Looks like a family room, possibly in a walkout basement. I could see a card table or a pool table set up in the adjoining small room that the wall creates.

At any rate, there is a column in that wall that supports the beam above.

Knock out that awful wall..., posted on March 27, 2015 at 17:27:39
and that beam thing attached to it. Of course, only if it isn't a real weight bearing structural piece. Now you have a nice open floor plan.
Throw some nice wood planks on the floor...nice livable area.

And why do so many insist on putting TV's near the ceiling? Watching a TV comfortably, your eyes should be looking LEVEL,or even slightly down not up. A setup for viewing fatigue.
Then there is the above the fireplace mantle position which I don't get either.

Obviously, the beam is carrying the floor above it.

Put a pool table in the other room and another flat screen on that side.

If anything, I'd think about extending the wall a bit to the wide side to give more speaker separation as well as space for a much bigger flat screen and lower the TV a foot or two.

Hmm, Rod can spot a load bearing member... not apparent to alot of people.~nT, posted on March 27, 2015 at 17:59:14

The wall should either not be there, but then the necessary weight bearing post would be visible, or the wall should be wider for exactly the reasons you state. As it is, though, it's a dinky compromise I think.

Extending the wall would be my solution as well. The wall appears to be a structural necessity as you've said, so create two separate rooms. It appears either one would be generous enough for a dedicated listening area. Far more generous than what I have anyway.

Several positioning option. i'd start with panels on either side of the tv column.

Yikes! No doubt a daylight basement.

Looks clean but awful decor, layout, and style.

With the low ceilings and horrible layout, I'm move the family room down here and install the system upstairs which has to be better than this.

I think a pair of Magnepan MC1 panels on either side of the TV and one of their DWM bass panels might make me happy for the TV sound part of the room , the rest of the system, I'm not so sure :^)
