Do You Go Both Ways?

My kid wonders about me. One minute, I'm hardcore rock and roll, the next, I'm into a Schubert piano thingy.

Is it just me?

Yep, and in between the rock and classical I find jazz quit nice.

I enjoy alternating tracks of Pantera and Debussy......... Or Puya and Scarlatti..... Or Metallica with Vivaldi.......

The only catch is adjusting the volume for each individual track.

but mostly classical, and by that I mean up to Brahms but mostly 15C to 18C.

Heavy on the choral and organ music.

One moment, it could be Prog playing (modern or old school), the next, Miles or Brubeck, then some weird 70's synth stuff, and then???

I generally keep an open mind to most styles of music, with exception to pretty much most Country, Rap and a LOT of new top40/R&B...

From AC/DC to Vivaldi.
From Simon & Garfunkle to David Allen Coe.
From Brubeck to Adele.

I enjoy HEARING both classical and popular music. But when it comes to LISTENING, classical is pretty much it. Although when younger, I listened to a lot of rock and zero classical, I eventually had to admit to myself that there just wasn't much in popular music to LISTEN to. IMO, few real rewards come from paying close attention to popular stuff while the rewards of classical music are abundant.

10-4 on the frequent listener rewards program.

Although, there is great artistry in some pop music. For me, I admire both ELO and EL&P, among others. Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding also come to mind.

Stock market is flat, but CNOOC is up.

At what age did you seriously begin listening to classical ?

I've tried but I just can't seem to enjoy it much.

I love rock, jazz, americana, and some big band. Not too much into current pop.

Both doesn't begin to define it

We are complex critters and there STILL isn't enough recorded music to fulfill our various needs
at any given moment, no matter how many genres are used to define it, no matter how incredible
your library of music may be.

Hi Abe,
Actually, I started listening to classical music in college (about 35 years ago!). Up till then, it was nothing but Beatles, Stones, Traffic, Procol Harum, Dylan, James Taylor, CSNY, etc.

Then I took a course in music history. I learned that music was not just a succession of pleasing sounds. Lots of people had actually assembled symphonies, concertos, sonatas, etc. using building blocks made of themes, rhythms and things that you could follow much like you'd follow the sentences and paragraphs of a book. I was hooked. Since then, as I said, I just haven't found much in popular music to engage my interest, other than simply enjoying the tunes, largely as musical wallpaper. It no longer really engages my interest enough to focus on it.

I'm sorry to read you comments, and must disagree.

That piece was written in 1967, and won a major composition award.

There is much electronic crap from many university students and faculty these days which is far inferior.

Still, thanks for your candid opinion.

That is, early post-college. I wasn't brought up with classical, in fact I wasn't brought up with much music at all. My parents weren't musically inclined to any genre and I heard nothing expect what was on AM radio and at church.

There is a story I tell:

One day on the bus returning from university I over heard a couple of ladies talking. One was bragging about her son, the doctor, (yes, I believe she was Jewis). One brag was that he was into classical music despite that he had never heard it as a child. I figured if the good doctor could learn to enjoy classical music as an adult, so could I.

For me it's 98% classical -- but classic is a very broad genre.

I go from Renaissance to Contemporary Classical. I like chamber music and opera, (though I prefer to watch multi-media opera on DVD/Blu-Ray rather than just the sound tracks).

I especially like the 20th century composers. Perhaps Shostakovich most of all but I like a variety of the others; one notably being Elliott Carter who is perhaps the greatest American composer ever.

Similar philistine reaction here: as I was listening, I kept thinking, "Why would they want to record someone farting pretty much all the way through the track?". Yup, with some things, I AM proud to be a philistine. Not to denigrate listeners who like it however. ;-)

Similar for me: probably 99% classical. Of the non-classical music I like, there's neither rhyme nor reason to it: Steely Dan, Flamenco, various kinds of folk music (mainly from Eastern Europe and Russia), Rodrigo y Gabriela, Amy Winehouse (well, Rehab anyway), The Doors (some of it), Devo (pretty much all of it - my wife likes it too). . .

My son is somewhat nonplussed by my non-classical tastes, and says, "You don't really like that stuff - you're just trying to MAKE yourself like it so you can consider yourself an artiste!".

?Both? ways.. there are more than two, I count 3 for myself: Jazz, Classical, and Rock., posted on April 1, 2015 at 13:14:43

Not just you... whatever floats your boat!

For moi, it's classic rock (from the 60's and 70's thanks to FM radio from back then), modern country (sorry purists; I dig classic country on AM radios and car radio), and, more recently, amazing new(er) artists like Washed Out, Alpine, Airiel, and Teen Daze. Electronic music nowadays really soothes my soul (make mine classic soul, by the way, 1968-1974 to be specific).

VERY much into the chillout genre too. 9Lazy9 is always within striking distance.
