A bud has a bathroom fan which causes a loud click on the line when turned on and I think when turned off as well. He can hear the glitch on the line in a near by living room on his stereo. He had the fan put on a separate line and he has dedicated lines for audio in the living room.

I was considering suggesting he place a line rated x capacitor across both the wall switch and also across the fan motor to filter this noise. Does anyone have any experience dealing with type of noise and what size cap would be appropriate? I believe the fan was changed out for a new one a year or so ago in hopes of eliminating the issue, not sure if he changed the switch but will suggest he do that also in case it is decades old and arcs on activation. Thanks for any assistance with this. Best regards Moray James.

I'd try replacing the fan wall switch. You're right in that it may be an old non-silent type that arcs a bit when operated.

Put one of these right at the fan if possible

Thank you. Should I simply match the max current rating of the motor or does the filter need to be rated higher to cover the cold start spike? Best regards Moray James.

I agree, change out the wall switch. Most bathroom ceiling fans use a shaded pole motor. I do not think the motor is causing the problem.
