Please forgive me for probably being off topic here but I'm looking at investing in 3 surge suppressors and need advice. The first will be protecting a 42" Panasonic plasma, dvr and just a few audio components. The second will be protecting my computer and everything associated with. And the third will be protecting my aquarium equipment, a fair amount.

I've read enough on surge protectors to know that they don't last forever and some of the better ones alert you when they're done for. This is what I'd like to get into if possible. Can anyone suggest a good surge suppressor for all three of my applications that comes in at $50 or less?

Thanks for the help

EDIT: Just read an article where a guy was comparing a Tripp Lite Isobar 4 Ultra to a simple APC Net 8 and and suggested he would choose the APC as the Isobar 4 would continue to power the outlets after it had effectively stopped working as a suppressor, whereas the APC actually stops all electrical transmission entirely when it's received too many jolts. To me it's real important to know when the thing has stopped working. Those APCs got recalled for some overheating incidences, but should I be looking at other APCs if they still offer the same type of disconnect protection?

Check out brick wall surge protectors. They're probably outside of your
budgeted amount, but if you value your electronics and fish, you might
want to consider the expense involved.

You may also want to consider whole house surge protectiom that is mounted at the breaker box. It also protects all the forgotton things like the electronics in micro waves, late model furnaces, ac's, stoves ect.

... the absence of sacrificial parts (e.g. MOVs) make it worth the extra cost.

I use UPS units in front of each of my fish tank filters. They provide surge protection and short term power that can save your fish.

Welcome! Bradley-

for your Plasma, DVR, Audio needs- check out Brick Wall products.
For a little more money check out Richard Gray Power Company products ( I use a 400 Pro model).

What are the features that these have that others don't? I only know about the timing question. Isn't there some limit to how fast a surge protector can "act"? Is there any 100% safe response time?

This is not a challenge. I truly don't know the answers.

... I think you are kidding yourself.

You'd be better off saving your shekels and investing in a good insurance policy.

Good luck.

I can speak to the Richard Gray line-
I have used this product in my TV/DVD/Cable Box set up since 2002.
Specifically, the RG products do not steal current away from your system.
This is important in Audio systems, where there is a high-power/current amp.
In my set up, the color(s) are superb, the background(s) are truly black.
There is no red nor white crush.

You would be better served with a UPS - Uninterruptible Power Supply. This will provide surge suppression as well as short term power supply in the event of a complete failure of your normal power.

Expect to spend $500 for anything that is of good quality and reasonable duration of supplemental power. You can find all sorts of these on FleaBay, get the biggest one you can...

While these things get laughed at by 'philes, for $100(amazon)you will get a cleaner pic on the plasma, some level of filtering and plenty of protection from most surges.

I don't have upper level gear to justify much more than this. When I do upgrade, I will look at the brick wall or similar.

I have used them for years and it has protected my Panny plasma and rack gear and I don't have a fit because I have to replace it with a new one.

Now let the monster plc bashing begin....

How likely are surges in power? I live in the northwest so I have few worries. If you live elsewhere there would be reason to be concerned. Also a post in the tweakers asylum might give you more ideas...
