I have a Audio by Van Alstine modified PAT 5 that I am running with a modified ST-70. I've had a hum/static issue for a while now and I think I've narrowed it down to the speaker stage of the PAT 5. First off when I plug the speakers directly into the ST-70 and use the pre amp set to any of the input sources (phono, tape, etc) there is no hum or static and works perfectly. Although when I direct my speakers through the PAT-5 speaker stage I get a hum when the volume is at zero. When I turn the volume up a static noise also appears. Also if I touch the bass knob (at any volume) the hum is accentuated. Lastly I unplugged the speakers but kept the connection from the amp to the pre-amp to check with headphones and the hum/static was the same. I'm a novice when it come to electronics so I'm not quite sure where to go from here. I'll probably end up taking it to a repair shop but wanted to see if anyone online had any thoughts or directions. |

Here's an AVA forum: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?board=48.0 If they can't talk you through the problem, then the only place I'd send it to is Frank Van Alstine himself. He's still in operation https://avahifi.com/pages/technical-support |
