First, I had to get over Bucky Pizarelli trashing John Coltrane's music in the interview he did with Stereophile. Next, I had to remember that this is a Chesky disc - I have to crank up the volume at least 5 dB to make up for the low recording level. Lastly, I think I needed my Bryston 4B-SST to resolve the details. Peter Appleyard's vibes sound as natural as I've heard vibes sound on vinyl. first impressions can be misleading.

there's some interest here to try and source both to do an a/b comparison between the formats.

pointless exercise i know, but might be fun!

Kal Rubinson picked it as a "Record to Die For" and did a quick comparison in the latest Stereophile. He says that the DVD-A is more spacious. As I understand that it was recorded in 96/24 PCM and I have only a stereo SACD player, I'll take his word for it.

thanks - looking forward to hearing it on both formats, posted on January 30, 2003 at 21:56:31

like you, i suspect dvda will win out on this but it depends on the player really

i'm a purist in that if a recording was originally done in pcm i prefer to hear it in pcm (and that happens to be the majority of recordings done today, including all of cheskys)
