I walked into one of the thrift stores that I usually haunt. It has been a long time since I have seen anything decent there. I usually only find CD's and clothing. I spied on the shelf the Marantz name. With much hope I gave it a look. If you are familiar with the Marantz CD5000, you'll know that the look nice on the shelf, but not so impressive when you look close. The case is tinny, it its light and the connectors are uninspiring. I started to walk away, but then decided to do an interest search on my phone. At the top of the list is the Lampizator, and I was shocked to read what he sad. He heaps praise on it, summing it up by saying, "All in all, Marantz CD5000 is one of the best CD players ever made by Philips if not even the best." I tested it. It was working fine. It was priced at $9.00, so I figured I had little to lose so I took it home. When I did a deeper search, I had another surprise. The Lampizator seem to be the only one that has such a high opinion of the CD5000. Most think it is decent, but I did not see anyone else the thought it was this great. I plugged in my trusty Sennheiser HD-555 headphones and it did sound very good to me, but I suspect a mediocre headphone amp is holding it back. I plan to put in in my main system and see what it can do. I was curious if anybody else has had experience with it. What is your opinion? Criticism and praise are equally welcome. After all, I only have $9.00 invested! Dave |
