I'm interested in adding a CD changer to my system and was hoping some owners of the NAD 515 or 523 can share some of their experiences with these products.

Since I just started down this road, I haven't eliminated other contestants, so those who own comparable CD changers are also welcome to share their thoughts on their own changers.

I've also heard that although the 515 is not being manufactured anymore, NAD is working on an upgraded changer that may be available in the fall. They are supposedly using a lot of the parts used in the design of NAD's top of the line single disk player, the s500.

I have a 515 that i purchased a few years back. I think the 523 uses a different DAC, but not sure. My 515 was a store demo and had been in use since early 1996 according to the shop owner ( manufacture date of 1995 ). Since it was a reasonably priced unit with a good reputation ( Stereophile ), he said that it was used VERY often on a daily basis during demo's. Like all of my other gear, i snagged it for a very good price.

I had used it in one of my systems on an almost daily basis for hours on end up until recently. There is nothing wrong with it, i just changed systems around a little bit. It NEVER gave me ANY hassle or problems. I have heard of problems with the display lights burning out, but mine was on continiously for over 2 years without ever being shut off ( except for power outages ). Completely and utterly reliable in my book. This is pretty good in my opinion, as it has the fastest drawer mechanism of any changer that i have ever seen or used. The others that i have used just seemed plain slow in comparison.

In terms of sonics, it err's on the "warm and musical" side. It is not overtly detailed compared to many more expensive players. If anything, it might tend to slightly gloss over the rough edges and glare. With the current level of standard CD's, this is typically a blessing and greatly reduces listening fatigue.

Needless to say, i like mine. Like any other piece though, it is up to balancing the system out for best performance. Mating it with other components that were all on the "smooth" side might tend to dry up the sound too much and rob the music of energy and life. As to a new model coming out, i hope it's at least as good or better. Sean

Hi,

Nad offer very good value and excellent sound. They are meant to use with mid-hi speaker or amp. If you have hi resolution speaker, you will find them lack of detials. That's my experiences. If you match Nad with the right gears, it can sound very musical and smooth.

Another WARNING: NAD's warranty is the worst I had ever experinced.
