Can anyone give me any opinions on the above two DACs in my system? Current system: Audio Research D130 amp, AVA FET SL preamp, Rega Planet CD with Kimber PBJ and Energy C-2 speakers. Will either DAC be an appreciable improvement of Planet (which I do enjoy). Also have a Pioneer 505 DVD player. I have read very good things about the Omega IV DAC from AVA but since both are mail orders for me in Ohio I would like to have some info on both before mocing forward with a test. The reviews on Bel Canto here have been pretty darn good!

The bel canto with a Pioneer DVD as transport is perhaps a slight improvement over the Rega Planet. I have tried the bel canto DAC1 with a Pioneer DV525 in my system and would probably say it is not worth the extra money. However if you use a better transport the equation changes. With a decent Cd player as transport and a Monarchy DIP to reduce jitter the bel canto easily outperfoms the Planet, more detail and larger soundstage. Whether it is worth the extra grand or so ...? The Planet is quite a bargain.

I've had the AVA Omega IV DAC in my system for about 3-4 weeks and am very pleased with the sound (great soundstage and inner clarity of different instruments and voices)and build quality. I have not heard the Bel Canto unit.

You need a speaker upgrade more than anything with all the other nice equipment you have. I actually own 4-Energy C-2's for my home theater system and they aren't bad (I paid $320 per pair from a Canadian dealer) but you could make a much bigger sound improvement with a speaker change than with a DAC change.

Thanks all for the notes. Sorry, been out of town. Regarding the speakers. I have these small monitors because the room is not large. I have been thinking of Theil 1.5's? What would you have in mind for a 12X20 room with wood floors with area rugs. Wife issues, so must be reasonably (read small) in size. Also have a Pioneer Elite 07 TX run into the pre-amp for HT; but priority is definately music. Don't use the sub-woofer with C-2's due to room smallish room size and the C-2's actually produce reasonable base for the room size. Thanks
