Holsts the Planets and Handel's Messiah...

Got both of these Lp's a few weeks ago and finaly got around to playing them tonight. Wow, Glad I did.

First Holt's the Planets. This is a London FFrr release w/ Zubin Mehta and the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, circa 1971. When I first placed the needle in the groove and Mars, the Bringer of War began, I realized that this was going to be a nice listen. Now, I wasn't listening intentely as I was cooking dinner but I was enjoying anyhow. Will be spinning this one every now and then. The next time, I'll do a more intent listen.

Now, onto Handel's Messiah, this is a 1959? Columbia Masterworks recording w/ Eugine Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra and Richard P. Condie conducting the Norman Tabernacle Choir. This is a two Lp set and is just glorious. As I write this, I'm listening to the hallujia chorus on side 4. This is the original Columbia 6 eye pressing. At the time I bought this, there was another copy that definately was a reissue as it was the 2 eye Columbia Masterworks label of the mid to late 60's.

First impressions are thus, for someone who grew up around classical music, thanks to my parents, these are good bets for my collection. The music is easy to enjoy and Eugine Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra do an excellent job on this piece. I have a couple of his other works, Beethoven's 9th, also w/ the Tab Nab choir w/ Condie conducting-if I remember right on a CBS Great Performances Lp comes to mind. That was also well done.

Having seen the posts on Holt's the Planets, I was able to recognize it and buy it (mostly out of curiousity as I've not really read the posts but hey...). I've heard parts of the Messiah for years and for some reason, I had to buy it too. Like I said, I'm glad I did.

However, despite being exposed to classical music, I'm not a huge fan of it but I do appreciate it and like some of it. And as I get older, I'm sure that'll change as my musical tastes change. I'm even buying more Jazz, slowly but surely and what I do have, I'm playing it more lately.

And speaking of Beethoven's 9th, I bought another version of it, this time conducted by our friend Leanard Bernstein...Just had to check it out as it was only .99 cents at my local Goodwill...

... that the Holst record you bought is the Audiophilander's favorite version. I believe this is the only classical recording he owns, but yet I've seen him manage to recommend it about fifteen times in the past year. So with raves like that, I think you'll find that you're in store for a scrumptious treat. Get ready to groove to some classic classical.

Upon hearing the first note, I came to that conclusion. My best friend also likes the Planet too and his personal favorate, I believe is Mars... He apparently plays it for his students when setting up the sound system in the school auditorium.
