......than CDNOW, CD Universe, and Tower. I haven't tried Amazon or Borders, but I wouldn't think they would be any better. I'm having trouble finding more than a small sample of Richter, Agerich, Oistrakh, Kempff, Celi, the Busch(sp?), Yale Quartets.....if you want Kronos or Emererson....NO problem........DG has a great remastering series....so does Decca (Legends)with 24/96 tech.,Emi is another one with a great remastering series.....and so on. Don't misunderstand, These outlets mentioned have SOME of these selections, but certainly not any where near all of them......maybe somewhere in Europe? To further clarify........I'm talking CDs......not vinyl.

Thank's, Tom B.

About labels, try also the 'double' series from Philips and EMI.
About shops, try also www.absound.ca and www.cdzone.co.uk, as well as Virgin and Fnac.

Christ Tom, you're disappointing me......

Oistrakh on vinyl is like an angel pissing in your mouth and at the moment I've got one Gulpener beer left, but you make me scream for Oistrakh on vinyl now.

Rega P3, cheap and very good, lots of angels over here.

Rob,

It's not that I have a problem with vinyl......I love vinyl......and you're description of my trusty Rega 3 is quite accurate......it is cheap ($700 used for the whole TT, Arm,Cartridge, RCA jack set-up mod,Discovery phono cables).........and sounds heavenly. The problem I'm having here in the heart of Silicon Valley is finding a good old fashion outlet for CHEAP but GOOD records. I read about folk's getting these 50 cent records........even John E........who lives in the Bay Area, but I haven't discovered anything close to that. I usually purchase some of my fav's in Rock for between $6.00-$9.00........Jazz is usually more........and classical is ridiculous. I've only been back to the area for less than 2 years and I'm sure there are places in Berkeley or San Francisco, but for me,.........I absolutely Hate getting into those places......way off my turf these days.........so unless I find something in the San Jose area (free parking, big wide streets, easy access to freeways, no one way-no left turn BS) ....I'm sticking to good ol digital. I lived up in Seattle for 20 years....EVERYTHING was cheaper......including records.....25.....50....75 cents....or maybe up to $2.00-$3.00 for real gems. The only other vinyl I've purchased down here are "Audiophile Recordings"......for between $28-$50....OUCH!! CDs ......by and large, are a less expensive proposition for an unemployed musician. Now, if only musicians were payed as much as software engineers............but that's another story........

Oistrahk on vinyl ... with more than one bier hier, posted on April 23, 2000 at 20:38:58

Rob,

Well, I took your advice from last week (I think it was), and found a copy of the Oistrahk/Cluytens Beethoven Violin Concerto ... bought it ... heard side one tonight, after a long, rather difficult day of working. (Holiday? Day of rest? Unfortunately not for me this year.)

Other than what I have come to regard as the "Angel of Death Pressing" quality, this was a moving listening session. My little Rega 2 performed admirably (the first time it's been hooked up 'for good' since we started our stereo upgrade odyssey two months ago), allowing us to hear Saint David's nice woody, rosin-y low tones, warm midrange, and clear highs. Cluytens' entrances at the ends of the violin solo sections were, IMHO, impeccable; I found myself thinking that the violin merely got bigger, rather than an orchestra weighing in. The cadenza near the end of the first section (especially the double- and triple-stops) were beyond mere human performance and into true human depth of expression.

I hope your Easter meal with your pop and sis went well.

Yours,
Charlie F.

Yes... Don't know if the booze or the meal went better, but I had a great time and we've been bashing our mum trying to convince dad he should find himself a nice woman again. I almost mentioned Jasmine, but KRS-One was rapping his way through the dinner so I could suppress that. We're pushing him into the arms of our 'second' mother who lately grew a sarcastic sense of humour like my dad. The world can use a bit more sarcasm and she looks very good.

You're right about the orchestra, but hell. It was recorded in the fifties and it's Oistrakh, so I can forget that. Just that divine tone of Oistrakh is enough to silence me.

Audiophile recordings...Aren't those the ones with a fresh seal around it and a sticker saying 'audiophile pressing'?

God, I hate that, it's like spraying 'new car scent' in a used car.

Thanks SE, I checked them out and they had EVERYTHING. I was truly impressed. Prices are a bit steep, but I'll be sure to use their services only when I have no other recourse.

Cheap at the price..., posted on April 24, 2000 at 09:18:51

They're better than most. Full price classical CDs in U.S. retail stores these days (Tower, Virgin, Sam Goody) are, like $15+. J&R in lower Manhattan is cheaper ($13). I buy a lot of music from the Columbia House and BMG Classical Clubs -- it averages about $8 to $9 INCLUDING DELIVERY AND S&H -- a major deal...for what they carry (which, in the case of BMG, is quite a bit).

That said, it could take me FOREVER to locate, in retails stores, some of the music that I buy from Amazon in a SNAP. Take, for example, the Late Beethoven/Busch on Pearl...in stock, <$30 (+S&H) for the 3 CD set, in the mail already. Who knows how long it would have taken me to cop this on the street :-)
