 Next January, Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Ikeda Theater at Mesa (AZ) Arts Center.......

This is the first time I ever recall a major orchestra touring to the greater Phoenix area...... I already purchased tickets for this one...... They're available online (link).

Program includes Beethoven's 8th Symphony and Mussorgsky/Ravel "Pictures at an Exhibition"......

 I was just reading about Muti earlier today - he said something to the effect that the decline of the arts (and arts support) parallels the general nastiness in society. Interesting - he could be right.

OTOH, considering some of the dust-ups we've had here on Classical Court over the years, maybe he's barking up the wrong tree! ;-)

 I saw Muti and the CSO at Segerstrom in Costa Mesa. Someone in the audience let out a loud cough early in the first work. Muti stopped conducting as the orchestra played on, turned and stared at that person for a solid 30 seconds. I'm talking death stare. After that no one else coughed for the entire concert while the music played. Loved it!

They were terrific. Muti's Pictures at an Exhibition the the Philadelphia Orchestra on EMI is still my favorite Pictures.ENJOY!

 I'm sitting in Row R in the Dress Circle...... That is my "sweet spot" for classical concerts......

By the way, the Ikeda Theater has nice acoustics for symphonic concerts...... Best such venue in the Phoenix metro area...... I'm not surprised that venue was selected over Phoenix Symphony Hall and some other places in the valley......

 This will be the first time I'll experience the Chicago Symphony in the flesh, but it will not be the first time I'll experience Riccardo Muti..... I attended two concerts in Philadelphia when he was music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra...... He put forth one of the best Beethoven Sixes I've ever experienced.

He is one of my favorite conductors...... He has that "old school" command over a symphony orchestra, that I believe yields top-flight performances, of whatever works he and his orchestra perform.

 and it definitely wasn't any sort of comentary on you, your experience as a concert goer or knowledge of concert etiquette.

It was (what I thought to be) a humorous story about Ricardo Muti staring down a member of the audience at a concert I attended.

 I've been there a few other times for jazz groups. Probably the largest assemblage of musicians I heard was the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

I can't remember where our seats were. Probably orchestra seats.

Can't wait for this, though!

 I saw Dream Theater perform there just a few months ago..... It's kind of weird that a rock concert and an orchestral concert both work in the same venue....... (It's more suited for acoustic concerts, the rock sound kind of "overloaded" the space in the hall.)
