I mentioned the British composer Philip Sawyers in a recent post as someone whose music might appeal to those seeking more "tonal" modern compositions. Born in 1951, he is a contemporary composer in the truest sense. Anyway, his latest Symphony #5, written in the past year, had its premiere posted to YouTube just a couple of days ago. Perhaps not his best, but fully reflective of his style, it is mostly a laconic work that can be considered as a broad canvas of sound with minor movement, rather than an epic exposition and development type of piece. I cannot help but to be a bit critical of the work as being "uneventful" -- to call it "pastoral" may not be off the mark. The work finishes with large-scale gestures more characteristic of the composer's first four symphonies. The conductor Kenneth Woods has championed works by Sawyers on recordings, so this is clearly about as definitive a performance as the music will ever get.
