The percussive climaxes of "Grohg" Ballet, as recorded, are some of the weightiest orchestral sounds I've heard from my speakers. Very impressive!

Not to mention "Grohg" contains some very interesting, colorful music.

"Grohg", not exactly 'dancing cowboys'.

Or just subscribe to Qobuz and forget about buying anything anymore (except the yearly subscriber fee).

My brother (the Ebayer) used to frequent the antique store in Fresno, CA where someone bought the .25 cent photo that turned out the be...Billy the Kid. He may have actually looked at it and tossed it back.

Only the 3rd or 4th extant. He apparently didn't like being photographed

I get that adrenaline rush every March when I hit resubscribe and pay my one time yearly fee for streaming in high res the exact same thing you are paying for. I'm sure there may be a time they delete some recordings, but I highly doubt they will.

Walking into a room filled with physical books and music discs (of various types) is a different kind of experience. I'll put it this way...when I walk into a library -- any library -- my heartrate picks up just a little. I used to get the same sensation going into Tower Records and other brick and mortar shops back in the day. So, it is the objects themselves, the "ideas contained within" and, perhaps, simply the design of the cover art, smell of the paper (books) which brand me. I am a COLLECTOR, like jdaniel, I think.

Enjoy streaming only, but do not think only in terms of comparative cost or simplicity of access if attempting to consider this -- it doesn't matter, because we are tapping into a different of type of immersion and experience!:-) Obviously, judgement and preferences are a much bigger topic that spans a universe of things.

"A Gentle Madness" (Basbanes) is a book about the love of books. Perhaps a similar book ought to be written about recordings from 78's to LP's to reel-to-reel to vinyl. That obsession, too, harms no one and is a very cool hobby for a lifetime of enjoyment.

. . . when you refer to the sensuousness of the aroma of a book or album cover!). But when I die, I'd like to have people feel that my impact on the environment was more minimal than that of most other folks in this country. I'm just sorry that I was a bit too late in unloading thousands of my CD's for cash at a used store.

Anyway, I'm sure you know this principle of life: uncluttered house. . . clarity of mind. ;-)

But, having said that, I'm VERY excited about my latest blu-ray purchase, supposedly to arrive next week:

I just can't help myself sometimes, especially when babe soprano Aida Garifullina is singing the role of Princess Volkhova! But (talk about inflation!) it cost me just over $30 when I ordered it last week, but now Jeff Sleazos wants $54 for it. Geez!

In any case, have a great Thanksgiving! (And I'm glad to see you posting here more frequently!)

Yes, but that is not what this thread was about. It was about buying downloads of material from Qobuz.

Trying to get there, Chris, but I'm finding that I am also buying some special to me vinyl. I won't buy much but it does force me to only buy very limited amounts. Don't know what I'm going to do about the Beatles, though. I want the new vinyl releases of all of their material. Other than that, I'm disposing of my CDs. Sadly, that means throwing them away mostly. SACDs, on the other hand, I keep, but don't buy any more.

I found the Rossini string sonatas, Philips box set with Accardo. I knew a store buyer would miss that one sooner or later!

Worth a few bucks. : )

I don't see anything on the website. Looking to buy my first Qobuz download, Szell's Mahler 4.

I have that set! Great one! And I was half kidding. Everyone has their own listening preferences and I can understand being frustrated with vinyl. For me, it's a lifestyle. I love having a room full of records just like a room full of books. The tactile element is important to me.

. . . I bought maybe 30% of the Pentatone SACD catalog last year (in four or five separate orders) because the prices at BRO were so cheap! I think BRO may still have quite a number of Pentatone releases for $7.99/each. A couple of my purchases were duds, but a surprisingly high number exceeded my expectations, sometimes by quite a bit.

Interesting review of that release: https://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/B09FS9NSJY/

To be fair to Amazon, isn't it the vendor that ultimately determines the price? Also it's currently showing a range from $31.11 to $59.99.

It seems that the reviewer knows what he's talking about, so I'm sure he's right about the Eurotrash production and the sonic and vocal vagaries (including the countertenor gusli player). I also have that Paris Opera Snow Maiden (referred to in the Sadko review) where Lel is sung by the same countertenor - actually, I thought that that was one of the least of the problems with that barely tolerable production. I'll probably post about this new Sadko too once I get my copy. At least the staging on the Gergiev Sadko video was true to the staging indications, even if its sound quality was pretty disappointing too.

Regarding the price, I see that there are actually two Amazon listings for the same release. The one you linked to is the one I ordered from (thank goodness), but here's the other one which I referred to in my post above.

Impact on the environment..., posted on November 26, 2021 at 03:01:55

We're living in a material world, and I am a material squirrel. Sadly, I do not feel that landfills will be the cause of the Earth's (seemingly) imminent demise. My home is carbon positive (simply based upon all-in energy usage), and I maintain a lush botanical paradise outside. My soul is safe (on THAT count, at least)!:-)

To wax more philosophical, I do not believe either that personal realization or "leaving the world a better place than it was before I existed" is format dependent...even if it's Hi Rez Surround Sound, which make a greater case for holographic immersion!:-) -- perhaps Dolby Atmos...

I suppose I could aim to limit my engagement with music to a single bamboo flute, koto, shakuhachi and a few singing bowls -- but, then, I would have to play the darned things MYSELF!
