Be sure not to miss a recently released Lyrita recording of Symphonies 5 and 6 in their premieres. Excellent sound quality. Both works must be compared to the Handley/Hyperion survey - which is great. The premiere 6th is not unlike the Handley recording. The 5th, however, is fascinating. It is INCREDIBLY kinetic -- the very young Andrew Davis is absolutely fearless as he hammers home this shocking work. Robert Simpson must have been blown away by the premiere!

Thanks for the heads-up. Sounds like a must-have for the Davis 5th at least.

Agree on the Handley/Hyperion reoordings, which get a lot of playing time here.

Usually "BBC Recording" means it was an air check, not a studio recording, and I've found many of the-like Lyritas flat sounding, with typical FM compression How' s this one in that regard?

they present an effective and realistic soundstage. Perhaps a touch bright...but they are a bit old. The quality of the performances EASILY outweighs the slight sonic limitations (I don't really notice them once I begin listening).

The choices are very limited for Simpson, and this 5th is a fascinating contrast to what I already know of that work.

The late owner of Lyrita ( he was a holdout for a few years against CDs) had a vast collection of air checks the current owners are now releasing on CD. The ones I got early on didn't have very good sound, just typical compressed FM sonics. I hope this one is better. Thanks.

since I have a substantial number of Lyrita CD's. Just to be sure, I pulled a bunch of them from my shelves (20 CD's, in fact). I have examined all of the booklet recording information, and sample-listened to half a dozen to refresh my aural memory. Many are original Lyrita studio recordings, some are Decca licensed reissues, some are EMI/PYE studio recordings. NOT ONE OF THEM is an "air check" or anything like that. In fact, the new Robert Simpson issue is the only "live" recording on the Lyrita label that I have.

Here is what I checked:

Lyrita SRCD.232...

239

Everything I just sampled (on a very revealing system, tubes and planars) sounds GREAT. In fact, the Simpson is a little less great than all of the discs listed, but still very good for old live recordings.

Good luck!

I well remember when these air check recordings on Lyrita started coming out. "Personal collection" of Lyrita's owner, recordings taken off the air from BBC concerts. Look at this one and the note below on it. Later they stopped putting that blurb on those releases, but "BBC Recording" on the front cover is a dead giveaway for these recordings. I have several of them, a couple being of the Jones symphonies. I was very disappointed in the sonics, and there were others too. Looking at the numbers on your list, they look to be earlier Lyrita releases so not likely to be from that BBC source, not that I have checked.

Interesting...I don't have any recordings from that series. n/t, posted on November 27, 2021 at 00:49:15
