I greatly enjoyed a Ravel disc with a remarkably expressive Pavanne for a Dead Princess - who else has recorded an outstanding (modern) version. I like heart on the sleeve for this.

I found a set of Perlemuter performing all of Ravel's piano music (on Vox)- his Pavanne sounds like the ersatz emotion of someone dying on a soap opera. I also found an unopened disc of Pascal Roge playing Ravel; I mixed in some other Ravel works before I get to his rendition of the Pavanne.
This has been especially fun since I am about to give my Beethoven sonata ritual (most Sunday mornings over the last two years) a rest. I'll post my Beethoven thoughts after some reflection.

I think Perlemuter recorded Ravel's piano music twice--in mono on Vox and in an inferior stereo version for Nimbus.

Angela Hewitt's Ravel set is underrated. This is coloristic pianism that I find so much more appealing than most of her Bach recordings.

Alicia de Larrocha, Vlado Perlmuter, Pascal Roge, Noël Lee, Robert Casadesus, Martha Argerich, Walter Gieseking and Ruth Laredo. These are the LPs of Ravel solo piano, then there's the concertos. Other performers have various pieces by Ravel on LP, they're a little more difficult to round up.
Enjoy the music.

Werner Haas - you forgot Werner Haas! ;-), posted on October 11, 2021 at 01:35:29

And with all this discussion about Gieseking, it's surprising that nobody has mentioned Haas, especially since he was a student of Gieseking himself! ;-)

(I actually enjoyed his playing very much in my LP days.)

his album would be in with concertos, posted on October 11, 2021 at 08:55:37

I don't have any LPs with Werner Haas playing Ravel solo piano music. I do have his concerto(s) recording on LP.

I also forgot to include the Minoru Nojima Ravel recording on Reference Recordings. It is a fantastic performance and superb recording/pressing.

Enjoy the music.

Thibaudet is pretty good, plus others, posted on October 11, 2021 at 11:56:31

For individual works Pogorelic, Argerich (fascinating video). Cortot in the Sonatine. Rubinstein excellent in Valses Nobles. Prefer him to Argerich, Michelangeli or Richter here. HJ Lim is well worth hearing in Valses Nobles too - I like this version. Richter in Miroirs.

Thibaudet, Francois for complete sets.

His Ravel set is excellent, and well-recorded.

But his Ravel solo albums were also available on vinyl too, posted on October 11, 2021 at 13:21:43

Andre Laplante has a recording on Elan: Ravel Piano Works, volume 1, (though I have yet to find volume 2.)

This, for me, is the real deal, treating the music with the subtlety and thought it deserves. Very well recorded.

I'm a bit surprised that nobody mentioned the wonderful and unheralded Abbey Simon, who recorded most if not all of Ravel's piano music...

bald2, I agree with you about Abbey Simon, whose Ravel set (originally Vox) I bought for 99 cents as an Amazon mp3 package. There's also a wonderful Abbey Simon Ravel "box," also 99 cents.

I will have to keep a lookout for that one, posted on October 12, 2021 at 08:47:52

No longer available on LP or even CD.

His Gaspard is simply stunning. It conveys the pulse and structure so clearly.

Thanks!

Enjoy the music.

Unfortunately, the readily available vinyl is on Murray Hill which, posted on October 12, 2021 at 15:09:43

are usually awful pressings. I don't need the vinyl, although it would be nice to find the recordings on Vox - I still think that Vox had some of the finest sounding solo piano recordings that were made in the 50's to early 60's

Yeah, those Vox LPs leave much to be desired-:). I'm okay with streaming on TIDAL, which has many of Abbey Simon's recordings. I also have thousands of LPs and CDs and hundreds of reel tapes, not to mention turntables, preamps etc... Still paring down!
