Psymphony Of Psalms...Psecond Listen

The first time I heard this Ansermet recording, 10 minutes was my limit. This time, about 5.

I love Stravinsky, his inventiveness, orchestrations, everything. But, pseriously, does anyone actually enjoy hearing this?

He gets the Beauty and Poetry of it.
And the Alleluia (SP?) that recurs great, and the Fugue.
That was an Absolute Go-To in College, for getting Truly Out There...!
I heard one or 2 new CD versions, but they sounded like a small Orch in a Big Room,
not the Intimate, even Spiritual feel on Stravinsky's version.

The Harmonicats always played everything Backwards in the first place.
The World isn't ready for Backwards Backwards Harmonicats.
Maybe Never.

Yes.

I participated in a performance of it (as well as being the rehearsal pianist for the chorus) in college. One thing I love about the work is the unusual stress on the Latin syllables, e.g.,

Laudate Dominum!
Laudate Eum!
(Stressed syllables in bold, from the fast section in the last movement. First line - very unusual, and all the more unusual juxtaposed with the more normal accentuation of the second line. Stravinsky himself loved the many possibilities of playing around with the accented syllables.)

I also find the final section of the work rather haunting.

Unusually for me, the two recordings of the work I have/had (Markevitch and Ancerl) are on the older side. I'd love to get a new modern recording in MCh, but I'm suspicious of a HIPster like Herreweghe (on Pentatone). Dutton has the old Bernstein recording available in quad, but I just keep hoping that something newer, inducing more sonic ecstasy will come out! BTW, did I mention that Emotiva says that it's audiophile day today? ;-)

Is a sonic mess. I'm willing to go at it again, on LP of course, if there's an excellent recording/performance available.

If you enjoy the motor-rhythm Stravinsky, as in Les Noces, then this is an enjoyable listen.

This is a work where I like Ansermet and his cast of singers.

Maybe available in multi-channel somewhere?

On QOBUZ at 24/96 so I'll try to listen to a bit of it today.

LP on Columbia.

Was it me? Can't remember if I picked up that lp. They're not all sonic miracles, posted on October 3, 2021 at 08:23:50
I do remember being disappointed by their Faure Requiem and Debussy St Sebastein. Muffled sound.

I recently ordered the Columbia Stravinsky conducting L'Histoire as being a recording of demonstration quality. I'll see how that goes before dipping back into the Psalms.

Yes, I enjoy it.

I haven't listened to it for a long time, but I have recording with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus on Telarc CD-80105. I don't think it's particularly liturgical, but I've heard some pretty hairy liturgical music.

The coupling is Poulenc's Gloria, with Sylvia McNair, which is sort of fun.

The audio quality of the Stravinsky-conducted L'Histoire du Soldat is top-notch indeed. It's even better than the frequently lauded Chicago Pro Musica version on Reference, in sound quality as well as in performance. I have the version without Jeremy Irons's narration, which was added for a later reissue.

BTW I find Symphony of Psalms to be a gorgeous, moving piece. It does have its "motoric" moments, but that is not an accurate description of most of the piece. Bernstein's recording is very good, and he has a much better chorus than Stravinsky did.

Ya, the Borodin 2 & 3 are fantastic. Get that one because it's better than a lot out there.
