ABC reports New York Phil. launches streaming service

News only to me?

The New York Philharmonic launched an on-demand video and audio streaming service Monday called NYPhil+ that is available for $50 annually or $4.99 monthly.

Reasonably priced but if it's heavy on You Tube and PBS re-broadcasts, really, what's the point?

It's adaptive streaming at up to 1080p video and 256Kbps audio.

I checked out your link (thanks BTW!) and came across their statement, "we value quality video over anything else". Really? So they cap their audio at a bit rate of "up to" 256kbps, which I suppose is OK for casual listening, but not comparable to what you can get with Qobuz and other streaming services.

It's not even as good as Spotify Premium which is 320KbpS and most of us realise that is a significant compromise for serious listening to classical music.

The reason that NYPO value great video quality over audio must surely be because they rate their physical beauty over any skill that they may possess?

Yes, it is very odd. They also talk about hopefully going to 4K video in the future. As PAR states, the audio streaming rate is even less than Spotify: not enticing at all.

Yeah - true enough. But OTOH let's not disdain physical beauty either! ;-)

As I wrote a while back after contact with a Berlin Philharmonic tech, 320Kbps is technically the best they can do on a video stream at the moment. No one does more. They record, though, in 48/24. Youtube does about 120.

So for a while, at least, lossless is available only from audio (only) streaming.

I do remember that you wrote that - I was hoping that they had perhaps. . . , posted on February 10, 2021 at 00:42:27

For myself, adding site to sound eliminates many of the issues that make "bringing a live performance into the living room" always beyond reach. Imaging, in particular, becomes a non-issue and simply listening to the music is all that matters.

Moreover, for every audiophile with a luxury car-sized investment in "faithful audio-video reproduction" there must be dozens who, like me, were raised on 19" TV's and continue to be amazed by 10 year old 42" screens with modest amps and speakers.

The visual aspect has such an impact on psycho-acoustic perception that where I once went to the trouble of switching cables to bring the direct audio feed to my main amps and speakers, I no longer bother.

Case in point: the Mahler symphonies were never favorites, just another set of interminable waits between a few meaty parts even with the delights of playing in the gorgeous brass chorale of the Second. Then I viewed this performance and was so taken by the emotion of the Urlicht that I sought out the text of the poem and story of Mahler's life. Now I have LP's of all the symphonies in multiple performances but continue to come back to viewing this one through T-amp and $60/pr. speakers.
