I'm going to finally pull the trigger on Guilini's Mozart Giovanni and Klemp's Magic Flute.

I'm still on the fence with regard to Klemp's Flying Dutchman. Someone tell me "no." : )

Other sale purchases include:

Howell's Hymnus Paradisi with Willcocks

Schwartzkopf's mono Strauss Four Last Songs and final scene from Capriccio.

So...Klemp's Dutchman. I really, really enjoyed it. Heady stuff!, posted on February 7, 2021 at 20:06:58
Apparently the "sound effects" are controversial, but I found them to be subtle, and wanted more!

Odd balance in the Overture: winds and brass up front, panoramic strings in the background. Metaphorical? When the Dutchman's ship "rolled" up in scene one, I knew I was hooked. What a big, epic noise, well-captured by the EMI team.

Extremely intense reading, and I was riveted by many stretches that never really caught my attention elsewhere.

If I may say so, the love music still seems a bit precious, but IMHO only in comparison to Wagner's white-hot inspiration elsewhere in the score.

I was also slightly disappointed in the ghost ship sequence, which is just a touch four-square and measured.

All-in-all, Klemp and Co's performance moved me. My references are Sinopoli, Levine, Keilberth, and Dohnanyi/VPO, still my overall favorite, but it's been awhile, and a back to back comparison with Klemperer might change my opinion. : )
