Why do Conductor's place the Tympani behind the Violins and Horns? Is it common?

Played a record today for the first time since September 1 when the pain in my hip and leg made it too much of a chore. Finally, today, 12 days after the replacement, it's no longer a problem. A very good day.

Anyway, for the first tune up, my eyes fell on my Dvorak 9 Symphonies box set, Kertesz/LSO/Decca. Wonderful recordings.

Most orchestras I've played in, and about half the images I just now Googled, the Tymps are in the center. Except Mahler, of course, then they're everywhere. Maybe it's the new sand box speaker stands but at times, in the Seventh, the verdammt Tympani, like in the Tra-La-Las, drowned out the violins and woodwinds.

I think it has more to do with the shape or depth of the stage..... I've been to concerts in which the stage was wide and not particularly deep (Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts), the timpani were placed off to one side, the stage simply wasn't deep enough to place them in their normal location......

I usually hear them behind the woodwinds.
