It's not the only way to conduct the work effectively, but it's very satisfying! I'm always struck by how much better a work Ravel's Rapsodie espagnole is than Debussy's similar work, Iberia - which is so fragmented sounding in comparison. IMHO, Ravel truly wins the battle of structure and focus here!

I've read before that Ravel is considered by many scholars to be the greatest orchestrator ever... I don't have enough musical composition knowledge to agree or disagree, I only know that there is something inherent in his music that I find so very pleasing on many levels...
