Thanks to jdaniel.

Today received the Sheherazade/Nuits d'Ete'; Ansermet, Suisse Romande that jd recommended down the page. I'm no stranger to Ravel but never before heard the Sheherazade or the voice of Crespin.

London OS-25821 is a brilliant recording and pressing. After listening I sat there for a few minutes, then shut down the system.

Dirty little secret, those later London's, pressed in Holland, are IMHO the quietest and most dynamic of all. And nobody wants them!

Do you know Debussy's La Damoiselle Elue? I humbly suggest seeking out Ameling's with DeWaart/SFO on Philips, posted on May 19, 2020 at 17:40:32
The stuff of dreams, coupled with two Duparc Songs.

It's hard to believe one is listening to and early digital recording.

Amen, that was among the best-soounding of the early all-digital CDs, posted on May 21, 2020 at 13:57:04

IIRC, I reviewed it for Digital Audio magazine when it first came out.

Ciao,

Too many microphones for me (confirmed by her own account - "at least 30"!). ;-)

But De Waart's Adagio con Quaalude is magical throughout. nt, posted on May 21, 2020 at 17:49:42

That's a fantastic record:)

Crespin's recording of the Verdi Willow song from Otello on the Decca Italian Opera Arias recording is a desert island selection (and disc) for me. Absolute, utterly perfect singing and artistry. Yet strangely, Crespin was not better- known for her singing of Italian opera.

Similarly, Jon Vickers was regarded more highly for Wagner and Britten, and his Italian opera aria LP on RCA is stupendous ( as well as his full recordings of Aida, Otello etc..). His Don Jose with Grace Bumbry singing Carmen on EMI with Fruhbeck de Burgos is magnificent and readily available...
