As I understand, Neutrik XLRs can usually take up to 7-8mm diameter cables with its original housing. However, I also see many commercial cables which are huge but also use some form of Neutrik XLRs. However, the entrance point is usually covered by sleeves, etc, such that I can't really see how they do it.

How is it usually done? Custom sleeves? Removing everthing else but the wires themselves at the end such that they fit? Hack it open and do without strain relief? I'm curious.

Thanks.

Each situation is different but you are correct, surgery is usually needed on the end piece. However, you want to create a solution that doesn't do away with the strain relief. The whole business can be covered by a stout, adhesive-lined heat shrink.
The other thing some, such as Purist, have done with really large ICs is to create a size reduction into a smaller diameter just ahead of the termination. I believe they have done this with some of their cables that are filled with goop, metallic dust, etc.
Another consideration is that you may want to try a different connector. Here is an example of a larger cable into some Furutech XLRs.

Thanks.

The Furutechs are probably most accomodating in factory form (I have used them, too), but I was thinking about using cheap plugs for trying out silly ideas. That's why I was thinking about how I would be able to use Neutrik but still accomodate bigger brews. BTW, Supra plugs are nice, too. They are not designed to take too big a cable, but they open at the top like a coffin and you can then reduce the length of downsized section at the very end and still fit.

Neutrik has available the BXX-14 backshell for the XX series XLR connectors that will allow you to use a 9 mm dia. cable without much difficulty. The Vampire XLRs are also an option if you need a bit more cable entry room. You can file these out so they will take a 10 mm cable.
Most of the commercial stuff that has a large diameter cable into a Neutrik XLR is done by using the old style Neutrik XLR and removing the clamping collet, boot and retainer from the old style backshell so that the cable passes through then filling everything with hot glue, this is how Cardas has done it for years. Tacky technique IMHO

Thanks.
That's how I thought they would do it but I was wondering if something more elegant would have been done by manufacturers.

Cheers
