Replacement for DIY Belden 19364 wire

 Belden 19364 has been a long time staple for diy ac power cords. Unfortunately, it is now hard to obtain unless you're willing to spend around $4/ft or more.

One can always buy a power cord from home depot and attach new end plugs, but I'm looking for the next step up from there. I like the idea of using Marinco and Schurter ends; they are still affordable. Now the main cost is the wire.

Soooo, has anyone found a reasonable 2015 replacement for this old work horse? I'm looking for something in $1 to $2 range.

 Wow, what a big spender ... maybe you should use the power cable that came with the unit.

 Try Romex. Cheap and matches the wire in the wall.

 My underlying assumption for this post, is to find what makes a "good" basic diy ac cable for 2015. The main consideration is finding a balance for the cable. To me, it makes no sense to spend $$$ on the cable and then scrimp on the plugs.

Crumb's original 19364 design worked extremely well in terms of cost and balance. But have we gotten to the point where $20 diy ac power cables are the domain of home depot extension cords with Marinco/Schurter plugs?

What makes a reasonable diy entry level ac cable today? If we are stuck with $5/ft for entry level cable, then should we start adding better plugs? I must admit that I am lusting over the furutech fi-11 plugs/iec. Perhaps, this is the level I should pursue.


FYI: I'm just starting off in the realm of diy audio. I have some reasonable equipment (VTL) that isn't running up to their level (lots of noise, RF issues, hum, and just plan lousy performance). My plan is to first experiment with power cables and interconnects and see what changes they bring to the system. Start cheap and then work my way up the food chain. I have replaced the wall sockets with Hubbell 5362's (a good start), and now I am on to ac power cables.
