thinner wire with Speakon connection or thicker, better quality wire with average speaker connections to a sub?

There is nothing wrong with a simple spade lug or those newer Z-bananas.

The speakons are designed for pro use and lock in place and allow the orientation only in one orientation. Important for concert set ups and such, not so much for home use.

What are its input connection options? Sometimes less is more.

The REL subwoofer cable is a 3-conductor design that features a 3-pole Speakon connector for practical reasons.

active. Rca or Speakon connections. The Speakon cable is very thin. Does it make sonic difference?

that it's three wire. I'm trying to understand the 'practical' purposes for the Speakon connected.

Three conductors, one conductor for each stereo channel positive, and only one conductor for common ground connected to one channel negative are connected to stereo power amplifier speaker output binding posts. The other end of the cable is plugged into the REL subwoofers 3-pole Speakon input jack which is wired with proper polarity for each conductor.

i get that. The conductors aren't the question. The Speakon connector is the question. Is it a quality connection? Can better/thicker wire improve the sonics?

Speakon connectors perform well and are worthy of high quality wire, meaning you will hear a difference vs. lesser wire. However, a larger conductor in general does not necessarily mean better sonics, so choose wire based on the same criteria as you would any other application. In fact, if you are building a speaker level subwoofer cable like that of the REL, it is unnecessary to use large gauge conductors since there is miniscule current demand for a speaker level subwoofer input application.

I don't know the distance but if available I would try both the speaker level and RCA line level and compare. Because you are not trying to transfer lots of current to drive the amplified subwoofer (the subs amp does that) large conductors are not needed. Good ones are needed. Is it a REL? You can remove the speakon on the sub and just do wire to wire just one connection? I'd prefer that to adding two connectors for three more connections.
