This is probably a silly question, but I'm wondering when using MIT Terminator 2 cables whether the little box on the cable is supposed to go near the source or destination component or doesn't it matter?

What's in the box and what purpose does it serve?

Many thanks,

George

Agreed George.

As a big fan of Transparent cables/cords, I too, wonder what (exactly) is/are in those network boxes. Regarding MIT, only Bruce knows.

Search the net: People have taken them apart and discovered RC networks inside. Brisson IIRC patented the idea of specific different gauges for different frequencies, modeling the cable as a waveguide. With only three, however there are bound to be certain gaps or perhaps better, unevenness in response, if the waveguide idea is true. The circuit is designed to even out this response.

Contrast this with Kimber, which uses seven different gauges on their Varistrand wires. Most ribbons incorporate a two dimensional waveguide (height and width). That's why so many ribbons have very different dimensions (Omega Micro being very, very thin to some of the offerings of Nordhost and Goertz).

The MIT Terminator 2 network box is intended to be positioned at the end of the cable nearest the load (destination component, as you say).
