Tube purpose question for SF Line 1:

What function(s) do locations V1 & V3 control/impact respectively?

V2 = gain.

Tube question:

Is an E188CC/7308 a direct swap for an E88CC/6922/6DJ8?

MTIA as always...

Center row is the most important followed by the back row.
The front is the least.

Put your best tubes in the middle. Second best in the back.

Edit:

V1 and LV1 - Input buffer
V2 and LV2 - Gain stage
V3 and LV3 - Cathode follower

If V2 is your gain tube then that tube is your most important tube sonically speaking. That tube will dictate the sound of the entire amp. Get the best sounding tube you can in THAT position. Sounds like the V1/V3 are splitters/inverters. Not as important but don't put crap in there either. Just that they will not add much to the sound.

Go over to the tube forum and contact Jim McShane. He has an encyclopedic amount of knowledge about these units and can set you up with the best combo without "over selling" you.

Personally I use a Gold Lion 6922. A great tube but there may be a better option for your preamp. Ask Jim????

If the amp can handle all E88CC/6922/6DJ8, it can also take an E188cc-

Matched sets of ECC88/6DJ8 Brimar NOS are the best sounding tubes for this pre amp. To add a little bit of spice to the sound the matched sets of Telefunken and or Amperex Bugle Boys tubes are very good also.

That's what I was using with my Sonic Fontiers SFL2 and Line 3 pre amps when I had them...
