I have a very first world problem. I am in the market for a mid range preamp. My system is LP only with a EAT forte, morche DP8 and ortofonA90' tri phono TRV EQ3SE vtl2.5 plinius sa250 usher BE10. Inhave tube rolled the vtl with RTF 12au7. The sound of my system is fast, dynamic and detailed. I have short listed the VAC renaissance and the Ayon Auris. One is 12AX7 and the other a 6H30 tube preamp. Any asylum inmates have any experience with either? I have recently listened also to the VTL 5.5 sig mk2

I always liked these if you want to add on a GOOD phono pre to your system.

Good tubes and vinyl - a good match

How long have you had one in your system, and what others did you compare them to? , posted on July 23, 2016 at 14:30:41

Let me restate that - I've had my eye on that for a long time. Especially the linestage ones.

I own a VAC Standard (no phono) Good sound..., posted on July 23, 2016 at 21:20:00
I bought it used.. With factory upgrades.
Excellent sound in line with your preferences.

Another preamp I have (and love) is an Audio Research SP-15 which has an excellent tubed phono section.
Also bought used several years ago.

If"I" were looking for a tubed with phono preamp today, I would be buying an Audio Research SP-20
New is $9 grand. But it is around the price of your suggested VAC Renaissance. VAC products are great.

Why don't you take a run over to the Vinyl or tube forum with this. You gotta have a tubed pre for vinyl!!!

You are serious about your vinyl and you seem to have a wide budget. So enjoy the search since you do have some wonderful options.

Those guys over at the tube forum do know there vinyl preamps!!!!

Hi Steve,

I'm actually in the process of building the SP14 line-stage. I already built the PH16 phono-stage and it sounds very good, especially for its reasonable price of $710, which includes shipping costs. I'm waiting for the enclosure for the SP14, which should be here by Friday or Saturday. Then I can complete the SP14 project.

I'll keep you posted.

Best regards,
John Elison

I have a SP-14 preamp(Don Sachs built) and a PH-16 phono preamp from VTA. I am satisfied that for the money, I don't think I could do much better for midrange, soundstage and upper frequency smoothness. I listen to primarily vinyl, Garrard 301, 401 and Thorens TD124.

Thanks Steve,

I asked, because the poster was giving praise to something he apparently never heard, so I was looking for some clarification.

It's good to hear that John's having so much fun building his kits and enjoying the results!
