Anybody know anything about the products shown on the back cover? They look appealing in black, for what that's worth. I found that the Phonos is $2k, which is more than I'd want to spend, but only because I'm quite pleased with what I've got at the moment. I haven't seen these products advertised before in print, and so far the only retailers near me coming up on Google is Guitar Center.

See ya. Dave

I have an SPL Phonitor 2 headphone amp. You will find many positive reviews of it on the web. I concur with them.

Of particular relevance to your question and their entering the domestic market with a range of separates, I can say that when the Phonitor is used as a pre amp ( or monitor controller as it is termed by SPL for their pro market), it offers the finest SS sound that I have heard and outclasses some considerably more expensive "audiophile" alternatives. Their high voltage circuitry ( which apparently places the active components in the most linear part of their operational envelope) appears to offer something special. BTW , total distortion is specified as below the measuring limit of the test equipment!

The Phonitor is effectively an all balanced item and really requires balanced in and out ( there is a single RCA input only). I don't know if this pro characteristic has been carried into this domestic range.

If this venture into the home market is equivalent to the performance of their pro products then I would anticipate exceptional performance at prices well below the competition.

The line looks, and from your words is, interesting.

Though I doubt I'm going to walk into any Guitar Center store within a 100 miles and see or hear any of the Pro-Fi line.

See ya. Dave

As their main product range is studio equipment that will explain why a Guitar Centre is part of their retail outlet. I had to buy my Phonitor 2 from a studio equipment aupplier without hearing.

If they have any sense then they may find that marketing a range of high end audio playback components requires specialist dealers. Otherwise my guess is that they would be far too expensive for many musos who tend not to use audiophile standard reproducers (there are some exceptions), even if they offer good value by our standards.

Yes and their NA distributor is the Pro Audio division of www.audioplusservices.com, not the consumer division.

I guess they should cut a deal with Audio Advisor, or similar, so somehow one can get a listen with a good return policy.

Back page of Stereophile can't be cheap, but it's surely a way to drum up some discussion and exposure to test interest.

See ya. Dave

"surely a way to drum up some discussion"

Well they have succeeded in that, here at least.

It seems the same retail situation applies worldwide ; no audiophile dealers only studio suppliers. They have an impressive list of SPL users in the pro field including mastering engineers like Bob Ludwig.

Quotes from a German review of pre-amp/DAC in the pro-fi line last month at the link below. Seems too long for the optional URL box.

Stopped by Guitar Center in Santa Clara on my way back from demoing the Oculus Rift VR setup in Mtn. View.

As expected, nothing to be seen of SPL Pro-Fi gear anywhere.

See ya. Dave

No surprise. As I said I think they will need to learn a bit about marketing outside of their core busines
